Greetings, my name is Dr. Richard. I have a Bachelors in Chemical Engineers from North Carolina State University and a Doctorate in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan.

I currently serve as a senior research fellow with a nonprofit foundation, looking at equity and access issues when it comes to transportation and innovative technologies. However, my academic background was in chemical engineering, and I wanted to stay connected to that knowledge to help others to learn chemistry, which is historically a difficult subject.

I had taught a semester in graduate school and really enjoyed it, so I wanted that same experience during my professional career. I found that at Northern Virginia Community College, where I was able to teach College Chemistry II (equivalent to AP Chemistry) during the spring and fall semesters of 2016.

I really like the opportunity to teach the next generation of students the importance of chemistry. I learn as much from them as they learn from me. However, you sometimes do not have the opportunity to do one-on-one instruction with a student and really help him/her become proficient in the subject. That is why I am interested in tutoring. Chemistry is a difficult subject, and if I can provide assistance to a student in need, I know that I will have made a difference in that student's life.

Chemistry

I studied chemical engineering in my undergraduate and graduate studies so I was exposed to various levels of chemistry during my studies. I currently teach College Chemistry Level 2 (equivalent of AP Chemistry) at Northern Virginia Community College in Alexandria, VA. My approach to tutoring consists of encouraging students to online resources (such as Khan Academy and Youtube) to get the basic material, then come back to me to ask questions about topics they did not understand, and providing worksheets to test their knowledge. This puts the onus on the student to learn in advance, which will help to prepare for the tutoring, and the onus on me to be prepared to respond to any questions. This combination, I believe, is the most effective way for the student to learn the material.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

I am a chemical engineer by training and passionate about math. It was one of my favorite subjects in school, and I passed the AP Calculus BC exam. I am eager to tutor your young child in prealgebra and encourage him/her to succeed.
SAT Math,

SAT Math

I took the SAT when I was in high school back in 2001. I got a 1390 (out of 1600), which assisted in helping me to get a full scholarship to NC State University. My best score was the math section, which I got 740/800.
