Our son loves to read now! Amazing - he always wanted us to read to him but never wanted to read himself. Now he is totally into reading by himself. Thank you Mary!
Our son really enjoyed his first session with Mary. He felt it was very engaging and supportive in helping him get more out of his studies. We look forward to continuing working with Mary!
My daughter is thrilled to have Mary as her Tutor. In their first session, Mary helped my daughter get organized with her missing assignments and upcoming tests. She now has the confidence to take her final exams.
She makes boring assignments more exciting by bringing the material to life. Mary is encouraging and infuses the confidence my son needs to realize he can do more than he thinks is possible.
My son had his first session with Mary for his English writing yesterday. She is professional, very patience, and heuristic during their session and voluntarily help him to review his work after the session. My son just like to work with her to improve his writing.
First lesson successful. My son liked Mary. He was not happy about getting a tutor and extra study time initially but after the lesson, he seemed more willing. Hopefully we can continue and help him to improve.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
The AP United States History (APUSH) test is considered by many high school students to be THE hardest AP test. APUSH classroom teachers assign copious amounts of reading each and every week. The reading is dense, but necessary. It is very easy for a student to quickly fall behind. These long and tedious reading assignments really highlight discrepancies in students' reading comprehension skills. I have worked with APUSH students in both Fairfax, Montgomery, and in private schools who found that their classroom teacher simply could not teach everything that is necessary to score a 4 or 5. All of my students have needed extensive help with the Document Based Questions writing section which is a substantial part of the APUSH test. I feel that I am uniquely qualified to be an APUSH tutor. I hold an undergraduate degree in American Studies from Mount Saint Mary's University and I hold a Masters in Education from George Washington University. I taught in Montgomery and Fairfax counties, as well as in New Haven, CT, for 7 years. While in Connecticut, I participated in a Teaching American History grant through Sacred Heart University in partnership with Yale University. I have completed History Alive! training. I love American history and I know how to teach the subject, breaking it down into comprehensible segments, and how to make it fun since it is a passion of mine. I also know how to instruct students so they can improve their reading comprehension and writing, as well as study and test taking skills.
I hold a master's in K-12 education from George Washington University. I taught in elementary schools for 7 years, all grades from Kindergarten through 6th grade. I hold a current teaching license.
I love teaching ESOL students! I have my Masters in Education in ESOL and I've taught for 7 years. I have studied several languages myself, so I know how hard it can be to learn to speak, read, and write in a new language. I am qualified to tutor in all areas from elementary school students trying to improve their reading to middle school students needing help with study skills to college students working on their writing and editing. I am patience and kind and make learning fun and interesting. I have the ability to break things down right to my students' levels, so it's just challenging enough, but not overwhelming. I can help you improve your English from our very first meeting!
My undergraduate degree is in American Studies. I have also taught middle school social studies. Most importantly, I love politics and current events.
I have a Masters in Education and have taught in elementary and middle schools for 9 years. I know how to teach reading from the basics in Kindergarten to more advanced levels of reading comprehension. I worked one on one with a 6th grade ESOL student in a reading intervention class for 20 minutes 2-3 times a week. In one semester, she made a year's worth of progress! I know that I can help you improve and strength your reading skills! I am available to tutor reading for elementary, middle, and high school students, as well as, adults. My specialty is working with ESOL students.
As a licensed classroom teacher, I have helped students get organized and develop time efficient study skills. I can show them exactly what they need to do to be more organized, to have more efficient time management skills, and to study more effectively. Being disorganized is one of the biggest reasons that students perform poorly. Having one central location where all of your assignments are written in and a routine of always checking that assignment book ensures that there is enough time to complete essential tasks. There are many ways to study: flashcards, studying with a partner, writing up answers to possible questions, creating art to symbolize, writing notes in an outline, visually displaying information on a giant board with color coded sections, etc. I can help student use these strategies, figure out which strategies work the best for their learning style, and how these strategies will help with recall on test day.
Are you studying for an upcoming TOEFL test? I can help you set up a study schedule, discuss areas of strength and weakness and develop an improvement plan, implement overall studying and test taking skills. Most TOEFL students struggle with the writing section and I can help you become a better writer and pass the test!
AP World History can be a difficult class for students because it may be the first time that they have had to think like historians and write like college students. I can help your student with the multiple choice questions, the short answers, the long essay, and the extremely difficult document based question. We will create a study plan and discuss study and test taking skills that are needed for your student to earn a 4 or a 5 on the AP test.
