About Rebecca

I am an Ivy League graduate, with a major in Philosophy-Economics, and a former admissions officer for my alma mater. I have experience with middle school curriculum development for math and English. I have teaching/tutoring experience with all levels, pre-k through graduate level. I specialize in reading, writing and proofreading, spelling, vocabulary, math, public speaking, as well as study and organizational skills. In addition to working with public and private school students, I also work with a number of homeshoolers as well.

I break down material that might seem overwhelming for students, and work with students to find the best way for them to take in information. I enjoy working with students to find the best ways for them to learn. From my own experience and years of working with students, I understand that confidence comes from preparation through hard work, dedication, and fun. I enjoy most when my students experience that "ah ha" moment. I believe that every student is quite capable in being successful and look forward to working with you to achieve your goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have written English curriculum and have experience tutoring and teaching students in English, reading, and writing. I have also studied logic as part of my Philosophy degree.

The key to ACT tutoring is helping students to become confident in how to approach and answer the various types of questions presented in each section. Since the ACT tests what students actually know, for preparation it is important to understand each individual students' strengths and weakness. Focusing on areas of weakness allows students to build confidence in those areas. This is done by helping students to think through why they have chosen a certain answer, and be able to explain it., not just giving them the answer and expecting them to remember. They can then apply their critical thinking to all types of questions, and in cases where they don't know the exact answer, they can still make a logical choice.

American History

I have studied history throughout my schooling, on both the high school and college levels. I have also taught US history at the high school level.

College Counseling

I am a former college admissions officer at my Ivy League Alma Mater. I have conducted college interviews for my school for over 25 years. I have been doing mock interviews and college essay proofreading/editing for just as long. I handled athletic recruitment as an admissions officer as well. I have also been a undergraduate college advisor.

Phonics

I have taught students preparing for entry into kindergarten how to read as well as students that were behind their grade level. My methods include starting with sounding out vowels, both short and long, then moving to words with single consonants before and after, beginning words, words that rhyme, alphabet puzzles, word maps, and picture/letter association. Single consonants are introduced, then sight words. Reading aloud is needed all along the way to make sure that the student understands the individual letter sounds, as well as the groups of letters that make up words and sentences.

Public Speaking

As a Program Coordinator for an after-school program, part of my responsibility included, making speeches and presentations to middle schools, to principals, teachers, students and parents, in New York City. As an admissions officer for Columbia University, duties included giving daily presentations about Columbia and its admissions process. I have also written speeches and presentations as part of the staff at AARP, where I was employed for over 10 years. I am also a regular lector at my church.

Study Skills

I have taught and trained both teachers and students in study skills methods, specifically Cornell Notes. I have also worked with students, on all levels, on organizational skills which ties into good study habits. As an admissions officer, I also acted as an academic advisor to undergraduate students, which included working on study skills with a number of them.

Writing

I have created English curriculum as well as taught English, reading, and writing to students in elementary, middle, and high school. I also have experience with proofreading, public speaking, and speech writing.
