About Sharon

Greetings! Are you wondering why I included TRUE BUSINESS in the title? TRUE BUSINESS is an ASL idiom that means "seriously, legitimately, wholeheartedly." I am sincere when I say I love ASL. :)
My name is Sharon, and I am a sign language interpreter for a public high school. I work in a classroom with a Deaf teacher that instructs hearing students to learn American Sign Language. I live in the Alexandria area, but am willing to travel to Falls Church, Fairfax, Arlington, D.C., and surrounding localities.

I have a family member who is deaf, and I learned sign language in order to communicate with him. ASL is a passion of mine, and I love to share the knowledge of this amazing language. My goal is to challenge students without overwhelming them. When learning a new language, the thing a student wants most is to be able to actually USE the language. With activities and lessons designed to start utilizing and communicating in ASL the very first day, students will be able to measure their success not only by seeing their grades improving in school but also by witnessing their own skills and confidence develop within themselves.

I graduated from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania with a B.S. Degree in American Sign Language/English interpreting. My previous experience includes working with deaf/blind individuals, tutoring college level ASL courses, attending workshops to improve my skills, and also interpreting in a variety of settings. My classroom experience includes interpreting in an ASL class and also providing tutoring and assistance to the students.

My schedule is flexible and am available weekday evenings and weekends. Contact me anytime. I look forward to aiding in your success!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drums

Music has always been an influential and important part of my life. Growing up with a family of musicians, I was able to teach myself how to play the drums from the age of eight. Over the years, I participated in band, orchestra, jazz band, and marching band throughout my schooling. Presently, I am still a practicing musician and play in a band with my brother. We create and write our own instrumental music. We have played various events such as Earth Day festivals, music festivals, charity events, and coffee houses.

Sign Language

I graduated from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania with a B.S. Degree in American Sign Language/English Interpreting. I presently work in an ASL high school classroom with a Deaf teacher that instructs hearing students in ASL. I provide communication/interpreting between the teacher and students as well as provide services as a teacher assistant. My previous experience includes working with Deaf/Blind individuals, interpreting in a variety of environments, providing tutoring at college level courses in ASL, and attending workshops to improve my skills. I am a member of Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, and am a certified interpreter for the state of Virginia.

Writing

During my years in college, I often assisted classmates with their term papers, essays, and writing projects. Sometimes they would come to my home, talk over the phone, or meet at a local coffee shop to discuss ways to improve their writing skills.
