About Cort

For the last eight years, I've worked as an English teacher and college counselor at a private school in Maryland. I've also been director of the Writing Center, there, and previously worked as a tutor and at a community college writing center, tutoring writing, literature, and standardized test prep. My favorite part of teaching is working one-on-one with students and helping them work through difficult lessons. I love the excitement that comes when students learn something new!

I specialize in college guidance, literature, writing, and test prep. My philosophy when it comes to college guidance is to find the best fit for the student, so that s/he will be successful. Obviously, the financial piece is huge, and I work with parents and students to find the best answer to this issue for the long term. Students have to be engaged in the process, which means taking into account their wants and needs. Similarly, my approach to tutoring for literature and test prep. is to keep the students interested and engaged by making the material relatable and getting to the root of what's being taught. I also enjoy working with students with different learning styles and needs, and trying different approaches to help get over roadblocks.

I try to be flexible with time, but I do require a 1-hour cancellation notice. I do offer makeup classes. I am happy to travel to the student's home or to a reasonable, nearby pubic place, such as a library.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve success in your studies!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I've worked as a college counselor for the last five years. In that regard, I've worked with many students to prepare for the ACT. I've taught ACT test prep. classes, I've examined the format with students, and I've gone over example tests with them.

ACT Reading

I've worked as a college counselor for the last five years. In that regard, I've worked with many students to prepare for the ACT. I've taught ACT test prep. classes, I've examined the format with students, and I've gone over example tests with them.

Career Development

I've worked for the last five years as a college counselor at a private school in Maryland. Most of my students continued to post-secondary education, but some did enter the workforce, and it was my job to advise them in their careers.

College Counseling

I worked as a college counselor at Oldfields School, in Maryland, from 2010-2011, and as Director of College Counseling from 2011-2014. 99% of our students attended a 2-4 year college after graduation, 97% attended a 4-year college. I had a very low transfer rate; 1 to 2 students per year transferred colleges. This is because I kept them invested in the process. I also developed very strong relationships with many colleges.

English

I've been a high school English teacher for the last seven years. I also ran the school's writing center and worked with students on English assignments. Before that, I worked at a community college writing center and as a tutor, primarily working on English assignments with students.

Grammar

I've been a high school English teacher for the last seven years. I also ran the school's writing center and worked with students on English and grammar assignments. Before that, I worked at a community college writing center and as a tutor, primarily working on English and grammar assignments with students.

Literature

I've taught literature classes on a high school and college level for the last nine years. I believe in making the study of literature fun for students, and analyzing without "killing" the story.

Proofreading

In addition to being a high school English teacher for the past eight years, I've worked as a freelance writer, editor, and proofreader. In addition, I've worked as a college counselor for the last five years, and much of my job involved proofreading students' college essays and applications.

PSAT

For the last five years, I've worked as a college counselor at a private school in Maryland. In this capacity, I tutored students for the PSAT regularly. I also taught classes in PSAT prep which examined strategies and time-saving approaches to taking the test.

Reading

I've taught reading as an English teacher for the last eight years. Reading comprehension can be especially challenging for students with different learning styles, but I've employed many techniques to help with this. Strong reading skills are essential for success in college and beyond.

SAT Reading

Working as a college counselor for the last five years, I worked with many students on SAT prep. I taught classes focused on SAT prep, focused on strategies and time management skills. I've also tutored students for many years in SAT test prep.

SAT Writing

Working as a college counselor for the last five years, I worked with many students on SAT prep. I taught classes focused on SAT prep, focused on strategies and time management skills. I've also tutored students for many years in SAT test prep.

SSAT

I've taught English and writing at a private college for the past eight years. Though I haven't specifically taught the SSAT, I have worked scoring it, and I have also written test questions used on the exam. Because of my teaching experience, I am well-versed in what is expected of test takers.

TOEFL

For the past five years, I've worked as a college counselor at a private school in Maryland. 25% of the student population were international students who were required to take the TOEFL for admission to college. I tutored some of these students and worked on test-prep strategies with them to help them score well on the test.

Vocabulary

I've been an English teacher for the last eight years, regularly teaching vocabulary through direct instruction as well as inclusion in my lessons in other ways. Direct instruction is the least interesting way for students to learn vocabulary, but I've used many techniques to help, including games and using note cards. Vocabulary acquisition is essential for students, as it helps them improve reading and standardized test-taking.

Writing

I've taught writing for the last eight years as a high school English teacher. I've also tutored students in writing, both for college and high school assignments. Strong writing skills are essential for students to succeed in college, especially with ever-changing admittance guidelines.
