About Crystal

I employ a Socratic method of teaching that works under the principle that everyone can learn a subject if given the right tools. I have worked with every age group (0-99) and most subjects. Furthermore, in the past I have worked as a private tutor, instructor, teacher, adjunct professor, and teaching assistant. As a tutor I once had a young student, about eight years old, who could not understand remainders and fractions. To help him through his difficulty I brought M&M's, his favorite candy, to help him visualize the process of remainders. He was able to bring his grade up from a C to an A and he had a great sense of accomplishment. In another instance, I had a student who was preparing for the GRE and it had been quite some time since she had been in school, she was in her early forties and math was not her strongest subject. After two months of intense preparation she went from barely knowing math to scoring in the 80th percentile range on the GRE math section; a feat that is quite an accomplishment. Another student of mine was diagnosed with ADHD and Ausperger's. His family had tried many other tutors but they could not find the right match until we began working with each other. We were able to work together to improve the young man's grades, confidence, and self-esteem. He went from D's an C's to mostly A's. After working with the family for about a year they were sad to see me go when I had to move to pursue a higher education; we had developed a mutual respect and bond.
During my undergraduate career and into my Master's program I worked as a Pharmacology Teaching Assistant, as well as, an Organic Chemistry Teaching Assistant. During this time I devised exams from scratch, taught lab course components on my own, and worked one-on-one with struggling students. During my Master's education I worked as an ESOL and GED instructor at a local community school for compensation, as well as, in a local women's homeless shelter as a volunteer. I'm a current M.D. candidate at George Washington University and very much enjoy helping others bridge the gap in their intellectual knowledge. During my years, and in my various educational roles, I have had the opportunity to work with students who have learning disabilities, have been diagnosed with ASD's, and whose organization skills are scattered. With the proper guidance I have helped students discover a way of helping them help themselves; many of whom have been lifted from poor grades and lack of confidence in their educational goals. A tutor can only help a student discover what is already within themselves to harness and I'd love the opportunity to foster that development in you. I only meet with students in public locations (i.e. libraries). Please email me with questions. Thank you for considering me as your tutor.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I'm a practicing Catholic, respectful of everyone's personal religious beliefs, and I have worked with students on World Religions and Bible studies as well as other religious based courses (i.e. college level courses and religious based curriculum's).

Biostatistics

After completing my undergraduate degree, I pursued a master's degree in biostatistics. Accordingly, I have worked with several students and have successfully helped them score well in this subject. I took many graduate level courses in biostatistics and always received A's.

Geometry

I've helped students pass Geometry and reach ideal scores when they believed they could not understand it.

Spanish

I grew up speaking Spanish in the household and took several Spanish courses through-out my academic career. I have worked with students who are novices to experts refine their Spanish skills.

I definitely recommend her! — Crystal is great and super patient! I needed a thorough review for the GRE math section and she explains specific problems with examples that are easy to understand and remember. For the verbal section she has also taught me techniques to save time and get to the right answer faster. ...
