About Mariyam

I love tutoring! I have been tutoring since the 11th grade, and have tutored throughout college. I have worked with elementary school children on Math and English. I have also worked with high school students on Math and Science. While working on my Molecular Biology BS from Johns Hopkins University, I tutored college students on Math (including Calculus) and Science (including Chemistry). I have worked with individual students and small groups. I like to get feedback from my students often in order to improve their experience with tutoring continuously and to be able to cater to their specific needs. I have gotten tremendous satisfaction from seeing my students' grades improve and from hearing positive feedback from them (including constructive suggestions). If you are interested in finding a well rounded tutor with a passion for teaching students and learning from them, then I'd be glad to hear from you!

Ms. Carmelita, my apologies for the sense of disappointment you felt as a result of our interactions. From looking at my text messages and phone records, I do remember that I had to cancel our session on November 14th, which we did reschedule successfully to November 15th. I spent the 14th trying to readjust my school schedule with the hope that it would allow me to continue tutoring your son till the test day. Subsequently, on November 20th, when my school schedule didn't work out as I anticipated, I had to urgently cancel our next day session on the 21st of November. After that, I decided to call so that I can explain the situation in detail and answer your questions. I called during the weekend of November 22nd and had to leave a voice-message to briefly explain the situation and I requested that you call me with any questions or concerns. When I did not hear back, I assumed that he continued his studies through the 2 week prep course in his school, which you had previously informed me of.

As for the doubling rate you saw, that occurred because I was unable to successfully deactivate my profile temporarily to stop receiving the many new inquiries from students whom I knew I would not be able to tutor given my new schedule (at that time, I was receiving an average of 7 inquiries every day). Since I did not want to permanently deactivate my profile, that was my second best choice to control the demand for my limited time. However, going forward, I'll certainly keep in mind the experience that I had with this sudden change and learn what I can from it. My goal continues to be striving for excellence in what I do as a tutor in order to keep teaching and encouraging every one of my students. I value both thoroughness and efficiency in my work and my goal is to maintain both of these values continuously while maintaining my own busy school/learning schedule.

On a final note, for my potential future students viewing this, I look forward to answering any further questions you might have about my tutoring and I am even more committed to helping you excel!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Aside from being a native Arabic speaker, I have studied the language formally for 10 years (along with English). I am fluent in both languages and can tutor in Arabic covering speech and reading, comprehension as well as writing. I have briefly tutored college students in Arabic and can cover a variety of topics while adapting my teaching style to each student based on their needs and strengths.

While working towards by Molecular Biology BS, I studied Genetics extensively. This included theoretical Genetics as well as Laboratory. In addition, I have two years of lab experience working on experiments that incorporate Genetics, Developmental Biology and Cell Biology.
