I have been tutoring since 1979 and have an excellent track record of superior results with students. My philosophy is that every student is capable of being a good student if they find a patient teacher who believes in them more than they believe in themselves. Students need to be encouraged by celebrating their small accomplishments as well as the large ones. I tutor students from private and public schools and I also work with adult learners.
The most rewarding experience I have had in teaching was working in a juvenile detention center where my students came to love history and were quite the debate team. I helped them to gain a sense of pride in themselves and to realize their current station was only a temporary stop on a road to great things. Those young men and women wore "dirty blue" jumpsuits. When it was their time to present before the class, their blue jumpsuits were pulled together as neatly as possible, well groomed hair and smile that registered the confidence of Caesar. I told them the position you take and the presentation you make will transform you into the words you say, and both you and your audience will see you far beyond the clothes you are in.
One of my students is now an assistant manager for a major grocery store chain. Love wrapped up in believing in the seemingly impossible is a recipe for SUCCESS. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have worked as a substitute teacher in the Alexandria City Public School System (ACPS) for a number of years and was given a certificate of excellence. My teaching experience has included K-12 and students court-ordered to the Alexandria Juvenile Detention Home School.
I have worked in the Alexandria City Public School System K-12 teaching phonics particularly in grades K-6 to help students begin to read via recognizing the sounds that letters and pair of letters make. I have taught phonics in the public school system and privately and have had great success both with English speaking students and students where English is not their first language. I was chosen to create a jeopardy phonics game for a summer reading and learning program at Mt. Vernon Elementary School in Alexandria, VA.
I have over 10 years teaching reading and reading comprehension in grades K-12 in the Alexandria Public School System. I also have over 20 years teaching reading and reading comprehension privately to children and adults.
I have a passion for helping individuals learn how to read for comprehension. Reading opens up a whole new world and I love seeing my students enter into that world of unlimited horizons.
I have taught adult learners, children and teens in developing study skills to be successful in their academic pursuits. I have done private tutoring and worked in the Alexandria City Public School System (ACPS).
I have a BS degree in Premedicine (Biology/Chemnistry) and graduated with honors. This major includes the study of zoology, botany, microbiology, cell biology, anatomy, physiology, genetics, organic chemistry, general biology, general chemistry, calculus, algebra, physics. My major covered a vast array of advanced science and mathematics. I have previously tutored in these subject areas and have specifically tutored dents preparing for the MCAT and nursing students preparing for licensure and nursing students experiencing challenges in physiology, anatomy, chemistry and higher forms of mathematics.
