About Ann

I have my PhD in German Linguistics from Georgetown University combined with over 35 years of fluency and superior proficiency. What sets me apart is that I have truly taught German and ESL for almost 25 years. So, I have experienced various teaching methods along the spectrum from conventional (memorization, flash cards) to natural (how children pick up a language). Most students gravitate to one method or the other. What do you do if the method taught in the schools is not suitable for your child? I adapt, individualize and bridge the gaps to enable your child to learn quickly, effectively and succeed. Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

For three years I taught at a public elementary school in Washington, DC. Although I taught mostly at the Early Childhood level, I did have opportunities to co-teach grades 1-5 with the classroom teachers. While I was there primarily to assist the ESL students, I also stepped in when the other students needed bolstering in reading or writing, for example.

Grammar

Grammar has always been a love of mine since grade school. I have always loved to play with words and to create inaccuracies and then to correct them, creating different scenarios in sentences by switching out verbs and subjects and changing tense, mood, and voice. Plus, I got to put some of this to use as a linguistics student at Georgetown and at the University of Iowa studying syntax in linguistics classes. My knowledge of grammar always comes in handy, no matter what I am teaching or tutoring.

Reading

When I taught at the elementary school level, I took several extracurricular classes in reading, particularly in beginning and remedial reading. In addition, I co-taught reading to the kindergartners with the classroom teacher and taught teaching in Pre-Kindergarten with that classroom teacher. Prior to this experience, I researched and wrote my Ph.D. dissertation on second-language reading at Georgetown University.

SAT Reading

As a Ph.D. student at Georgetown University, I studied reading as the main topic of my dissertation. Consequently, I learned a great deal about putting together grammatically cohesive lengths of text and about using appropriate vocabulary that always elevates the tone of a piece of academic writing.
