I have my PhD in German Linguistics from Georgetown University combined with over 35 years of fluency and superior proficiency. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
For three years I taught at a public elementary school in Washington, DC. Although I taught mostly at the Early Childhood level, I did have opportunities to co-teach grades 1-5 with the classroom teachers. While I was there primarily to assist the ESL students, I also stepped in when the other students needed bolstering in reading or writing, for example.
