Susan is a great tutor! I was looking for a teacher who actually realized my weaknesses in English. In our first meeting, I realized that she was the one I had been searching for. She's very supportive and knows how to bring out the best in her students.
She really knows how to teach students! She helps her students easily understand and memorize new words very easily. My improved English skills have given me more confidence to speak and not be afraid.
The best thing I can say is, if you are fortunate enough to get her, you will get an excellent teacher.
Susan is helping me with accent reduction and grammar. She is a very experienced ESL teacher and has taught overseas. She spends a lot of time preparing class materials and makes the class very interesting. My grammar and English conversation have noticeably improved in the last couple of months and I have also learned about US culture and history. I highly recommend Susan to anyone who would like to improve their English without hesitation.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have an M.S. in Organizational Learning (George Mason University, Fairfax, VA), a double degree in English Literature and Education (Boston University, Boston, MA) and a CELTA Certificate in ESOL (Cambridge University, London, England.
The focus of my undergraduate degrees and original teaching certification was for teaching English to middle school and high school students. Areas of focus included literature, writing, grammar and related language arts.
Following graduation, I taught High School English in the U.S. for a year and a half. I also taught Language Arts to middle school students at an international school in Singapore.
I currently tutor high school and college students in personal essays for college admission and academic writing.
I have an M.S. in Organizational Learning (George Mason University, Fairfax, VA), a double degree in English Literature and Education (Boston University, Boston, MA) and a CELTA Certificate in ESOL (Cambridge University, London, England). I have experience teaching English to High School students, and worked several years of experience teaching ESL in the U.S., Asia and Europe.
I taught ESL to group classes and private students in Japan and Malaysia for 4 years. During this time, I also taught private classes to businessmen that were designed to target individual language challenges.
I spent a year teaching at an international school in Singapore to Taiwanese and in the the U.S. I spent several years teaching foreign nationals through one and three-month intensives at a language school in Old Town Alexandria. The student body ranged from Germany, Switzerland, Mexico, Spain, France, Italy, Brazil, Venezuela, Argentina, Japan, China, Taiwan, and South Korea. The full time 5 hour a day curriculum included grammar, speaking, writing, listening, reading comprehension, idioms, vocabulary, and pronunciation. I also taught electives in Business English, U.S. History and Culture, and TOEFL. During this time, I also had private students in writing, pronunciation, and TOEFL.
During my teaching studies, I spent significant coursework time developing strategies for teaching grammar from a straightforward deductive manner that is much simpler than sentence diagramming and other more painful methods of grammar learning structures. During my time as an ESL teacher at a language school in the US, I spent half of each day in the classroom providing structured grammar lessons from textbooks and crafted individual lessons that targeted specific student weaknesses based on written and spoken errors. In this manner, I helped students to improve more rapidly by addressing their specific challenges.
The focus of my Bachelor's degree and original teaching certification was for teaching English to middle school and high school students. My areas of academic focus included American and World literature. The types of literature studied included both short stories and novels, as well as a variety of essay styles and poetry.
I have extensive experience proofreading student texts from high school level, through college to adult professionals. I apply myself with thoroughness and diligence to support finished writing that is both free of grammar errors and highly readable in style. I have also developed different techniques to help students identify their own repeat errors in a manner that is of great use to them in the long term.
During my time teaching in Japan and Singapore, I worked with ESL students in reading that was based significantly on two methods. The first was phonetic, which relies on sounding out words based on established spelling patterns. The second is schema, which involves choosing content that is tailored to student interests and cultural context. In addition, I have often used media (video and audio) to supplement reading in a way that enhances interest and progress.
I spent two years teaching TOEFL as a classroom elective. During these classes, I helped students identify typical challenges presented in TOEFL exams year after year. I also provided private tutorials in this area.
Teaching vocabulary is a main component of both my ESL teaching and English teaching experience. I use methods of teaching vocabulary that rely on learning meaning from context. In addition, I have material that looks at common prefixes, suffixes and word roots that can be used where context is not available. For teaching word lists, I have a system to ensuring permanent retention of new words through a sequence of passive and active usage exercises so that students become comfortable with using new words quickly and comfortably.
I have extensive experience helping students to summarize, describe, elaborate, and simplify expression through writing. This experience was founded upon extensive training during my undergraduate studies, and my teaching experience includes expository and narrative essays, and developing organized and concise academic papers. During my time teaching classroom ESL to adults at a language school in the US, I specialized in teaching adult professionals and graduate-level ESL students how to synopsize writing from other authors, and develop correct Business English writing for various types of professional communication.
