I have been tutoring English as a second language for four years at the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia, and have also taught classes and tested ESL students at LCNV (all work as a volunteer). In March 2012 I received ESL teaching certification from Oxford Seminars, following a 100-hour TESOL/TESL/TEFL training course that included skills development, lesson planning, and a teaching practicum. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I recently completed the 100-hour ESOL/ESL/EFL Teacher Training Course at Oxford Seminars and received a teaching certificate from there. Also, I have tutored, taught, and tested ESL for the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia for four years.
