About Norman

I am an area high school teacher and adjunct professor. For 20+ years now, I have taught and tutored in a variety of subjects, for students with differing ages and needs, and have experienced many different scenarios. I am skilled at not only teaching content quickly and efficiently, but also study skills for mastery.

Whether you want to brush up on skills in Latin, classical Greek, English, or other, or want to pass with a higher grade, I can very often help make the difference.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

My work in history, English, art history, humanities, and science, and in anthropology/sociology allow me the basic information to understand the progression of humankind, types of anthropology, theoretical knowledge, etc.

Archaeology

My advanced degree in classics and ancient languages, my study at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, where I visited over 200 archaeological sites, qualify me for this subject.

Aspergers

My work with students in Latin, English, and humanities has caused me to encounter special needs students in Aspergers, who require understanding and specialized instruction. Two of my recent students were at the top of their class.

Autism

I have 8 years of experience teaching autistic and asperger's students. My daughter is high functioning autistic, and so I have unique experiences in teaching and interacting with this special needs population.

Classics

I hold an MA in classical Greek and Latin, have taught and read works in the original language, as well as in translation, have studied in Greece, Italy, Britain, France, and Crete.

Greek

I hold an MA in classical Greek.

Phonics

As a teacher of English and Latin, which has no silent letters, the use of phonics (pronouncing words by syllables and combinations of syllables -disyllables, blends, etc.) is critical. Because of this, I am well versed in this skill. In addition, I have taken coursework in morphology/phonology of language (basic linguistics) as well.

Religion

I hold 9 credits in religious studies, and completed my master's thesis in a aspect of Judaism.

Social Studies

I have a BA in history, which covers all aspects of history, plus 12 credits in psychology, 3 in political science, hold personal finance designations Series 6, 63, and 65, plus insurance licensure (economics background), 6 in art history, and 12 in humanities.
