About Louise

I hold a degree in English literature as well as graduate education in English: both in Education and Literature. I published my first newspaper articles while still a college student and was a journalist with daily and weekly newspapers in the 1980's. I have written twenty volumes of poetry, published critical academic papers and monographs, and am now working on my 19th detective novel. I have taught individual students throughout my career, specializing in teaching foreign students who need to acquire English quickly.

I have helped many Asian students gain fluency and improve their spoken English with special exercises to help them improve pronunciation as well as business, academic, and creative writing. As a published novelist, I have particular skills that will help the struggling writer to develop a plot and complete a polished work of fiction or nonfiction. I am available for part-time tutoring in the Arlington-Alexandria areas during evenings and on weekends. If you need help with any aspect of English reading, writing, speaking or improving your fluency, I can help you. I am mature and patient, which can really help with that study anxiety!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

General Music

I have studied voice, music theory and singing in private lessons from age 6 to age 15, beginning with participation in my church choir as a child, due to my ability to sight read in early childhood. I studied music appreciation as an undergraduate, I have been in high school, college and adult choruses including a pro Musica medieval SATB chorus, professional soloist for wedding events as a young adult, and a choir soloist, and have recorded my own original compositions as well as composed lyrics and vocal arrangements for works by Edgar Froese (Tangerine Dream.) My other background in music consists of extensive travel and attendance at opera, symphonic and chamber music concerts in the US and Germany, and I have written two books on the subject of 19th century Romantic composers while living in Germany, for English language publication.

Reading

Reading comprehension and reading for children's ages.
B.A. in English and M.A. in Education/English.

SAT Reading

When I took the Preparatory SAT test back in 1976, I scored high enough to qualify for a full college scholarship. There are strategies to taking the SAT that involve focusing on eliminating impossible answers and making the best possible choice in the time available. I can help your high schooler not only with the math and verbal SAT preparation but also with how to take the test itself.
