I am an LCPS elementary school teacher and have taught both kindergarten and first grade. I have also tutored older students outside of school. I work with many ELL students, and my classroom is a fun and engaging, hands-on place to be! I earned my master's degree from UPenn in Elementary Education (K-6) and my bachelor's degree from UVA in English.
I love teaching reading and writing, and I enjoy seeing my students' successes and excitement as they become more confident in their abilities. Math is a fun experience in my classroom as well, as it is a very hands-on and student-centric time. I meet each of my students at their current ability level so that I can be sure that they are confident in all materials before moving ahead. I employ the same strategies in tutoring as I do in teaching, ensuring success, fun, and confidence!
I am trained in LCPS' "Pathways" reading/writing program, a strategy-based program that incorporates the skills of spelling, writing, reading comprehension, phonics, and vocabulary.
I employ hands-on, creative, and fun activities for teaching math, writing, and reading.
I use a variety of methods to teach phonics, including songs, movements, and visuals.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have experience teaching D'Nealian (both print and cursive) as well as Handwriting Without Tears. I regularly teach handwriting in my classroom.
Phonics work is a crucial part of my classroom. I regularly utilize a program called "Jolly Phonics," which incorporates short songs and movements to aid in letter sound recognition and application. I use many phonics games that help students to learn and implement the various skills that will aid them in reading and writing.
I am trained in the LCPS Pathways program, which supports literacy through both reading and writing. I am skilled in DRA leveled reading and am knowledgeable and well-practiced in administering lessons that correlate with specific reading levels. Reading should be fun, and I love to pick out books that are targeted to a student's interests so that it is an engaging, exciting activity.
