About Lisa

Bio

One of my favorite things to do is to help students get that "Ah, ha!" moment. My first tutoring job helped me decide to pursue teaching as my career. I believe that everyone can learn and it is my job, as a teacher, to find the way the student learns best. The methods that work for one student may not work for another student. The challenge of finding what works for each of my students is what makes this job so fun...that, and working with people.

My degree is in secondary mathematics...

One of my favorite things to do is to help students get that "Ah, ha!" moment. My first tutoring job helped me decide to pursue teaching as my career. I believe that everyone can learn and it is my job, as a teacher, to find the way the student learns best. The methods that work for one student may not work for another student. The challenge of finding what works for each of my students is what makes this job so fun...that, and working with people.

My degree is in secondary mathematics teaching and I am qualified to teach any math for middle school, junior high, and high school students. I think trigonometry and calculus are particularly fun! As part of my previous tutoring job at Weber State University, I am a CRLA certified tutor. The primary emphasis of this certification is tutoring using questions.

I believe that it is my job to take what the student already knows and ask questions to help the student better understand the material. It is not my job to teach, or re-teach, the student my way of doing things. That can potentially make things worse. I have been a very successful tutor at WSU, having had several students request me for subsequent semesters of tutoring. I consider that to be very flattering and a testament to my skill at teaching.

I have very high standards for myself and for my students. This does not mean that I expect perfection, it means that I expect students to try and to do their best. No one is perfect, especially when first learning something. I expect my students to come prepared with questions, and my students can expect me to be prepared to answer them.

I am pretty flexible when it comes to scheduling, and I require at least two hours of notice if a session will need to be canceled. I would be happy to reschedule a makeup session at the student's request.

I am really excited to begin working with students again. I look forward to hearing from you and to begin our fun journey toward success!

Excellent and Detailed Tutor

Lisa was extremely patient with my daughter and guided her through the processes that she was struggling with. The assignment was extremely complicated and required well over the original scheduled time. Lisa stayed on the call and continued with the tutoring process until my daughter was able to grasp the concept. We will reach back out to Lisa when there are any other issues that arise.

Lisa is the most perfect tutor anyone could ask for! Being a student who is often too shy to ask questions, I always felt very comfortable to ask Lisa anything I was confused about. I knew I could always admit what I didn't know and that Lisa would never be condescending and never make me feel embarrassed. She knows when to give you time to figure out something on your own (which helps me to learn how to solve the problems) and when to guide you through it. She works with the student to find which ways to solve problems work best for that student, and is always happy to explain things in a variety of ways so the student can best understand the concept. Through hard work and help from Lisa, she helped me achieve an A in both semesters of my Pre-Calculus class.
