About L Carvel

Helping students to understand difficult concepts often requires only another way of seeing the problem. I can teach nearly any concept in a variety of ways to meet your needs and to help you understand, apply, and utilize the information we study together. Each students educational needs will be met with an individualized plan to help them succeed and that utilizes their strengths to their maximum and also seeks to help you strengthen where you are weak. For me, as a tutor, I love to see that light of comprehension dawn on your face. It is what motivates me to keep teaching and keeps me passionate about helping students achieve beyond what they thought possible! With 18 years of working with all kinds of students, I continue to find joy in the interactions and learning that take place between student and teacher. Teaching and tutoring are where I can make a difference for you.

I have taught English, Geography, and Speech to students ranging in age from 13 to 18 years of age in a remedial, regular classroom, and honors program. I currently teach AP Human Geography to students in the 9th grade. I have taught business English and History in a college setting. I have helped students learn to write excellent essays within the context of high stakes testing like AP tests, ACT classes and End of Level tests for High School.

I regularly tutor students two days a week in a school sponsored tutoring programs called Legacy Learning in which I help students with English and Social Studies, as well as help them with online testing. I have been doing this type of tutoring for the last 5 years. Prior to that, I tutored my own students in an early morning tutoring session in which I taught them test taking skills, summarizing skills, and analyzing skills to help them find critical information in both informative texts and in narrative texts. I had this type of tutoring for five years prior to tutoring in Legacy Learning. I have the experience, desire, and knowledge to help your students succeed in whatever we study.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I regularly speak in both public and in church.
I lettered in both region and state debate and drama in High School.
I have regularly judged H.S. debate both at the region and state level.
I teach a Speech class at a local Junior High.
Finally, I have acted in a number of productions in High School, including the lead in "Arsenic and Old Lace".

Religion

I have been teaching the fundamentals of most of the major religions of the world for almost two decades.

I have taught and continue to teach about Universalizing and Non-universalizing religions in the world, with special emphasis to ethnic religions of note.
I believe that teaching my students to find common ground with other religions and thought can help them to understand what motivates to make the decisions that they do.

Social Studies

I currently hold a degree in Geography. I have taught for the last 18 years as a Geography Teacher, but for the last 8 have been the Social Studies Department Chair. As such, I have availed myself of numerous opportunities to study history so that I could support my department and help to fill in gaps in their knowledge or methods. I have also taught a college level American History class. Finally, I have taken numerous Master's Level history classes through our school district and in conjunction with a technology grant. I have always loved the study of history and consider myself a history buff.
