I am an experienced tutor who has been assisting students with reading, writing, grammar, and understanding literature since high school. I am an avid reader and writer myself and practice my language skills every day. My tutoring style focuses on understanding basics and learning rules before creative rule-breaking can occur, but I encourage independent critical thinking and self-discipline as much as possible. Language skills, like any other skills, should be practiced daily, and I encourage people to do simple language-developing skills like rd aloud or write letters. I do my best to help students have fun learning about language literature, and I try to integrate different types of literature, media, and pop culture into lessons as well as teaching canon and classical literature. I encourage hard work and dedication and in return offer flexibility and patience. I also have experience with several forms of standardized tests, including the ACT and the LSATs and can teach students some basic critical reading skills to help them succeed on entrance exams.
I also have extensive experience as a public speaker. In high school I was the 2003 3A Utah State Debate Impromptu champion and have continued to develop my impromptu speaking skills. The ability to organize thoughts quickly and coherently is essential not only to public speaking but also for essay exams such as the written portion of AP exams and in-class exams in high school and college. I also have experience in mock trial and moot court competitions and can offer assistance for trial preparation at the high school, college, and graduate level. My mock trial experience includes both civil and criminal cases from plaintiff or prosecution and defendant sides. I can teach students or teams vital skills for succeeding in public speaking, in-class presentations, and trial presentations.
My reading, writing, and grammar experience started in high school and continued through college, during which time I worked as a TA and a writing center tutor, assisting students in editing papers and giving grammar tutorials to other tutors. I graduated summa cum laude from Southern Utah University in 2007 with a bachelor's of arts in English Literature. My public speaking experience also started in high school where I competed in impromptu, spar, Lincoln-Douglas, and policy debate. My senior year of high school I was the impromptu captain and policy captain for the Snow Canyon High School debate team. My public speaking experience continued in law school, where I took extensive courses in witness examination, prosecution, trial skills, and participated on a national mock trial team. I graduated cum laude from the Creighton University School of Law in 2010. I am an experienced tutor who has been assisting students with reading, writing, grammar, and understanding literature since high school. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
