About David

I was trained in Russian at the U.S. Army's Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, where I graduated Magna cum laude. I then spent two years in Russia as a missionary during the dissolution of the Soviet Union. I worked for 16 years in Federal law enforcement as a Russian Language Specialist.

I love learning and sharing what I learn. I have been an avid scholar of history, politics, and international relations for most of my life. I grew up in Utah, studied Russian in California, served as a missionary in Russia, and worked in New York City and Washington, DC.

Since I left Government service I have looked for opportunities to share my skills and experience with those who could benefit from it, and I welcome the chance to help you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Russian

I completed the US Army's year-long Russian Basic course in 1989, graduating magna cum laude. I then spent two years in Russia as a missionary for the LDS church where I interacted with Russian people daily and fairly mastered the language. I graduated from BYU in 1996 with a BA in International Relations and Russian minor. I worked for the FBI for five years as a Russian Language Specialist in Washington, DC and then became a counter-terrorism analyst with focus on the former Soviet republics. I have experience teaching and tutoring from my time in the Utah National Guard where I taught Interrogation, and at the LDS Missionary Training Center.
