About John

I'll never forget the way I smiled when one of my first students ran up the stairs to our tutoring appointment, dragging her mom behind her. This student had either missed half or all of each our first four sessions. But by setting reachable goals, helping her make progress toward those goals, and (most importantly) building a strong and supportive relationship, this student started coming on time and ready to succeed at each appointment. And she really did succeed!

I am a certified elementary educator (1-8) and have experience as a classroom teacher from preschool to middle school. I am currently a school improvement consultant and education researcher. For me, helping students succeed academically is an exhilarating challenge, and I work to continually improve my skills to help all students succeed. I am confident I can help you or your child succeed, and do so in a way that is enjoyable for all involved!

I have experience helping students overcome gaps in their mathematical abilities. Using research-based instruction that I learned from the cutting edge math education department at Utah State University, I have been successful in helping identify and remediate students' missing math understanding and skills, as well as taking advanced learners to the next level.

Helping students who are struggling in reading is one of my greatest passions. I love to work with struggling readers and help them improve their abilities by targeting their highest-priority needs, and addressing those as quickly as possible.

I also love working with young writers. As a nationally published author, I love to organize information into writing. I also love creative writing and savor great words from great writers as inspiration.

Phonics are the foundation of reading. My experiences as a literacy tutor at the Utah State University Literacy Clinic and as a classroom teacher have prepared me to build basic and advanced phonics skills to help young people enjoy reading. I have experience helping ESL, learning disabled, and other struggling students make remarkable gains.

My approach to instruction is tried, true, and simple. I begin with assessing the highest priority needs of students. Based on these assessments, I create personalized instructional goals together with the student and parents. We then use research-based approaches to reach our goals. Most importantly, I work very hard to make sure this is an enjoyable and rewarding experience for everyone involved.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

As part of my training to become an elementary teacher, and in my experience as a classroom elementary school teacher, I have created curricular materials and provided general classroom instruction for almost all grades in both ELA and math CCSS standards. As an educational consultant, I have created curricular materials for most grades from K-12. In short, I have a great deal of exposure in reading and breaking down CCSS curricular standards to translate into instructional practice.

Elementary (K-6th)

As a certified and experienced elementary educator, I have experience working directly with students of all grade levels from PreK-6. As an education consultant, I also have access to some of the most impactful resources and interventions that education research has provided to date. In short, I have experience providing high-quality instruction to all grade levels of elementary students.

Phonics

As part of my education in receiving a B.S. in Elementary Education from Utah State University, I worked as a literacy tutor in the Literacy Clinic there. As a tutor, I worked under the direct supervision of one of the university's (and country's) foremost researchers of reading instruction. A major part of my training and experience at the literacy clinic and as a classroom teacher involved providing phonics assessment and targeted phonics instruction to struggling readers. In short, I have high-quality training and successful experience as a phonics instructor.

Reading

As a reader tutor, teacher, and specialist, I have helped students make great progress in developing their reading skills! Teaching reading is one of my great passions, and I have been involved in helping whole schools and individual students make gains in their reading abilities.
