I've been fortunate in being able to share my enthusiasm for learning by tutoring students from grade school, junior high and high school, and undergraduate college. Several students came to the U.S. from abroad and spoke English as a second language, and have gone on to prominent universities and careers. More recently, I tutor my own children when they need it, but I welcome the opportunity to work with more students. My subject expertise is in K-12 Biology, Chemistry, general sciences...

My subject expertise is in K-12 Biology, Chemistry, general sciences and proofreading. I can also tutor college-level Japanese.

Science is a life-long interest for me. After taking AP Biology and Honors Chemistry in high school, I carried this interest to college and graduated with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Biology from Yale University.

Having a Japanese mother and relatives, and having lived in Japan for a total of 8 years, I speak Japanese as fluently as a native. I learned to read and write Japanese formally after taking an intensive intermediate Japanese course at Yale University, and subsequently working for a Japanese company that tutored me in speaking, reading and writing business Japanese. As a manager of Asia-Pacific business, I converse and correspond with Japanese business people on a weekly basis, and I speak Japanese with my family at home on a daily basis.

I have always been a good speller, reader, and writer, having been a Yearbook editor both in junior high and high schools. My professional career in Utah began as a software documentation editor at WordPerfect Corporation, a business applications software company, for which my responsibility was to proofread the texts written by the technical writers. As a contributor to a blog column for a public constituency website, I had to self-edit/proofread my articles to ensure they fit the parameters and constraints of the website before they could be posted.

I hope to have the opportunity to continue sharing my experience and help more students learn the knowledge they need to achieve their goals.

Proofreading

Proofreading

I began honing my proofreading skill as school Yearbook editor in the 9th and 12th grades. My professional turn at proofreading came when I was hired as International Documentation Editor at WordPerfect in Orem, Utah, for which I edited and proofread user's guides for word processing software in several languages. More recently, I was a contributing blog columnist for a civics constituency website, for which I wrote, edited and proofread my article submissions to be approved by the web content managers. My work had to be checked, qualified and approved before the submission deadline to be published on time, so my proofreading had to be accurate and efficient.

I have a bachelor's of science degree in Biology from Yale University. I served 3+ years in the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps and was a qualified Emergency Medical Technician in Southern California, all for which I relied extensively on my background in biology. I have tutored 9th - 10th grade biology to a foreign student for two years in Palos Altos, CA; she subsequently returned to Japan and was accepted to Waseda University, one of Japan's Top 5 universities. When my 13 year old daughter received a C grade for science in 2014, I began tutoring her in biology and chemistry. Having just completed her final term in 9th grade, she now has an A average in science for the year.
