About Leila

I'm entering my final year at the University of Utah as a double major in History and International Studies (focus on Foreign Relations & Security). I have recently completed a semester working on research on the SALT I agreement and talks, which I received a grant for. I have studied Russian in Russia the Summer of 2014, and will be heading back there this fall as a Department of State intern at the US Embassy in Moscow. I have also studied music, being a former double music major on the Violin, and have given private violin lessons. In addition to giving private violin lessons, I have participated in elementary after school reading programs, helping students improve their reading skills with the use of worksheets, having them read to us out loud and us reading to them.

I have assisted students in different areas, including history and Russian, in addition to giving private violin lessons. I am an avid reader and love to encourage and foster that in all the people I meet. Teaching history can be extremely enjoyable and doesn't have to be presented in a way that makes it a snooze fest. It's all about finding the best way YOU learn and working with that. As a person who doesn't learn in a standard way, and who can get distracted easily when doing something I don't like, I completely understand the struggles many people have and work with you to overcome them. We will take the time to figure out the best way you learn, whether it is visual, auditory, or tactile learning. I will then cater the sessions to that method. I am also no stranger to working with those whose English is not their primary language. Having studied in Russia, I know the struggles of trying to speak in a foreign language. I am a very patient person.

While having a joy for a subject is well and good, being able to translate the information to a way that the student can effectively retain it while not being bored out of their mind is more important. I make sure that whatever subject is being worked on is done in an engaging way that is not tedious.

Don't hesitate to contact me with any questions you may have. I will most certainly ask you plenty of questions to get a feel of what you're struggling with or what your goals are. I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
