As a fellow student, I get what it's like to be in a class and want some extra help. I recently graduated with my degree in Mechanical Engineering, and I gained plenty of experience along the way, not only with the subject matter, but also with balancing school and life, studying effectively, and finding the best available resources for help.

I have passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. I have experienced tutoring in engineering subjects from both sides (being the tutor and the tutee) and hope to be able to help you succeed in the demanding classes characteristic of engineering.

I have worked as a private tutor for a variety of subjects, and I have participated in countless study groups. I really enjoy being involved in collaborative education this way because I think that being able to teach a concept or subject is the best way to keep it sharp in the mind. Likewise, my approach to tutoring is focused more around a discussion than a lecture style, where you and I are able to figure out the material together. We'll talk through your ideas and reasons as we work out example problems and review key concepts.

I am familiar with a wide range of topics. I took (and passed!) eleven different AP tests (Human Geography, European History, Spanish Language, English Language, English Literature, Statistics, Calculus, Psychology, Physics Mechanics, US Government, and Comparative Political Science) as a high school student, and currently participate in my University's Honors program specifically to make my broader education more meaningful. Because of this, I am eager to work with students who might be struggling in topics that aren't necessarily their major focus (either for a degree or just what they want to do with their education) to find ways to build from things they are already familiar with and help them to understand the material and know how it might apply to their future course.

Most of my formal tutoring experience has been at a collegiate level, specifically working with student-athletes. I also have lots of informal experience teaching things like sports, cooking, crafts, and school subjects to younger age groups, from elementary school to high school. I love seeing students get excited about a topic as they have success with it, especially younger kids. I am a big believer in helping kids get a good academic start as early as possible to shape their future.

I am excited to get together with anyone else who loves learning and is willing to work hard to overcome those difficult classes that we all get stuck in!

Proofreading

I have worked as a peer editor at a university for a year now, and I love proofreading and editing papers. I have taken a training course that focused on helping the writer become a better writer (in addition to helping the paper become the best it can be), along with working with ESL students, group settings, and online conferencing. I have also taken a technical writing course with an emphasis on writing in engineering. I can help you proofread business letters, resumes and CVs, essays, short stories, long stories, poetry, and anything else you're working on writing. I give tons of feedback and help you develop your own writing. I can also share some pointers and insights on how to become a good proofreader.

Spanish

I have actively studied Spanish for over a decade in school settings as well as home study and immersion. I am fluent in the language and passed the AP Spanish Language exam as a Sophomore. I spent 18 months teaching and serving the Hispanic communities of Arkansas and Tennessee and during that time was responsible for teaching the language to many of my fellow volunteers. I am very familiar with the difficulties of the language and how to grasp difficult grammar context. I love the language and culture and am eager to help anyone, from beginners to anyone wanting to practice speaking and refresh the accent a bit.

Dependable, patient and curriculum appropriate...

Silvia initially started tutoring my 5th graders well over a year ago. She started working with one and did so well that awhile ago, fearing my other twin was falling behind a bit, I had her start working with him too. She has done an amazing job with both of them. Not only does she assist them in learning current application, but also introduces them to "future" curriculum items and works with them to learn these concepts so when they are exposed in school, they do better! She has been patient, kind, and very accommodating even on the days that the boys would rather be doing anything but tutoring... They have made major improvements in school, and without Silvia, I fear this would never have happened! She will do great for you too!

Very knowledgeable in engineering maths

Silvia helped me in engineering maths, and continues to provide help where she can; her comments are structured well and easy to follow. Silvia is always at hand and her responses are usually within a couple of hours.

Excellent

It was a tough section for me but she simplified everything to my understanding. She knows the subject well and would recommend her to my friends as well.

Engineering for robotics

Silvia is going to work with my niece reviewing her robotics course information. In my correspondence with her she’s very upbeat and supportive of young women pursuing an engineering path in school.

Thanks, Susan! I'm looking forward to working together and helping your niece become a great engineer!

Great connection

Silvia is doing a great job helping our daughter get ready for the science GED exam. We're confident Silvia's teaching will result in a passing grade. Grateful for her patient and caring style.
