I am an editor. I have academic and professional experience in correcting and improving spelling, punctuation, vocabulary, style, and conformity to multiple style guides. I have the most experience with the Chicago Manual of Style, but I am familiar with others as well.
I am a writer. I have over fifteen years of experience writing in a variety of genres, styles, and for many audiences.

In my last year of graduate school (2015–2016) I taught my own full classes of introductory French (101, 102, 103). I enjoyed having students from diverse backgrounds, including students whose first language wasn't English, students with disabilities, and older students returning to college after many years or attending for the first time.

As an undergraduate, I ran my university's Advanced French Grammar Lab. Students who needed extra help could sign up for 25-minute sessions where they would ask me their most difficult French grammar questions and practice using the grammar with me. That job helped me to get even better at grammar, but also to be able to explain and organize difficult information in intuitive ways. It helped students, too: in its first semester, the lab increased students’ final assessment scores by 6 to 8 percentage points compared to students in previous semesters.

While I was still an undergrad, I co-authored "What The French?!," a textbook for beginning and intermediate French grammar, with Dr. Marc Olivier. At the same time, I worked as a TA for a couple of professors. I was also a Resident Facilitator at the university's foreign language immersion housing, a position normally reserved for native speakers.

Grammar – My background in linguistics (the scientific study of language) gives me a deep knowledge of English grammar. Think of it this way: being able to speak a language is like being able to drive a car. Just knowing how to drive a car doesn’t mean you know how to fix one. I know English grammar like a mechanic knows a car; I know how the parts fit together and how to fix it when they don’t.
I also have plenty of experience teaching grammar in ways that make sense—I won’t be like most English teachers and say, “That’s just the way it is!” There’s always an explanation.

Proofreading and editing – When I worked as an editor, it was my job to make sure commas were in all the right places, everything was spelled and capitalized correctly, and hundreds of other tiny details that go into making writing clear, concise, and consistent. I can provide the same help for your writing.

Writing – I write a lot: fiction, humor, serious essays, and more. I read even more than I write. No writer is perfect, but with over fifteen years of experience, I have learned many valuable lessons about writing.

I’d love to hear from you. Contact me and tell me what kind of help you need.

Knowledgeable and Easily adaptable

I have done many french classes, but none met my needs, precisely. This is a wonderful experience to have my immediate needs met. Andrew is a linguist and knows the language inside and out. I can ask any question and he has an answer with an easy to understand explanation. I am very satisfied. I can see myself finally getting beyond my decades long mediocrity.
