About Ben

I have been a graduate teaching assistant for both undergraduate and graduate level courses in Florida and Utah. I have also taught Biology to high school students, a course I conceived of and designed called "Principles of Biological Evolution." I have also designed and taught undergraduate Biology labs. With degrees in Politics, Environmental Science and Mathematical Biology, my academic expertise encompasses a huge range compared to the average scientist. I am a published philosopher, economist and biologist at the moment (and soon will be a published mathematician).
I love helping students understand the basics of my favorite fields, and helping them see how the basics can be applied and put together to make complex deductions about how the world around us works.

I have been studying mathematical modeling and statistics for more than 7 years for my M.S. and PhD degrees. My current specialty is the construction and analysis of mathematical and statistical models, particularly models useful for the life sciences.

Contact me today if you need help with math, statistics, anthropology, history, environmental science, ecology, biology, or philosophy!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I aced Algebra I, Algebra II Honors, Geometry Honors, Trig/Precalculus, and Statistics AP/Honors in high school. I've tutored many math students while an undergraduate and graduate student.

Algebra 2

Aced Algebra I, Algebra II Honors, Trig/PreCalc, Statistics Honors (I even taught 2 of the course lectures on a dare!), and Physics 2010 (at UCLA) all while in HS. Scored 720 on the SAT Math IIC Subject Test and 780 on the SAT Physics Subject Test.

American History

I scored 5 out of 5 on the AP American History exam. I've also aced several undergraduate and graduate-level history courses while completing my BA and MS degrees. In fact, I was so good at History that my professors tried to talk me into doing a PhD in the field.

Anthropology

I have taught the Laboratory portion of a graduate course, BIOL5221: "Human Evolutionary Genetics", that is cross-listed with the University of Utah Anthropology Department twice. I have also taken several Anthropology courses as an undergraduate and a graduate student. These include "Intro. to Anthropology" at the University of Central Florida, and several graduate courses ("Prehistoric Human Evolution" (at University of South Florida), and "Evolutionary Ecology in R", "Population Issues in Anthropology", "Evolutionary Psychology", and "Directed Research: Quantitative Genetics" at the University of Utah). My Master's degree thesis was on the evolution of behavior and I spent 2 years deeply reading the literature about mathematical and genetic models of social evolution. Finally, because my PhD research is on the evolution, ecology and mechanisms of aging, I have read extensively on evolutionary ecology and evolutionary anthropology in general (Napoleon Chagnon, Laura Betzig, Bruce Winterhalder, David Buss, Martin Daly, Margot Wilson, Robert Trivers etc).

Biology

A top Biology and Math student in high school and college, I am now a PhD student in mathematical biology. I get math. I get biology.

Ecology

My MS work was in Evolutionary Ecology, and my PhD work is in Mathematical Ecology/Biology.

English

I received college credit for 5 English courses while in high school (University of Central Florida). I received college for 3 college History courses while in high school (University of Central Florida). I also received college credit for both "Intro. to Physics" (at UCLA) and "Chemistry I for Engineers" (at UCLA) while in high school. I have a BA in Politics with a minor in Political Philosophy, and took graduate courses in Mathematics, History, Politics, Urban Planning, and Philosophy while still an undergraduate student. I have a MS in Environmental Science & Policy, which featured lots of high-level reading and writing. I also have a PhD in Mathematical Biology/Mathematical Ecology, which has also featured lots of high-level reading and writing.

Finite Math

My PhD work is in mathematical biology, and I believe that I am qualified to teach Finite Math because I have taken many hours of mathematics course work and directed research while completing my M.S. (which was on mathematical models of social evolution and altruism), and my PhD, which is on the ecology, evolution and mechanisms of aging.

Genetics

I have taught the Laboratory component for a graduate genetics course, BIOL5221: "Human Evolutionary Genetics", at the University of Utah twice. I have also taken Directed Research in Quantitative Genetics. I have also researched the genetics of aging, rare human diseases, and gene-for-gene models of coevolution. Finally, in a high school course I designed and taught last Summer, "Principles of Biological Evolution", I spent 2 weeks on principles of population genetics and the neutral theory of molecular evolution.

Philosophy

I have aced most every Philosophy course I've ever taken, at both the undergraduate and graduate level. I am an author of 2 peer-reviewed Philosophy of Biology articles.

Political Science

I have one degree in Political Science and took both undergraduate and graduate courses when I completed my BA in the field. For the 3 years in which I was a declared major, my GPA was 4.0 every single semester. I've also done graduate work in Political Theory (which was my minor).

Proofreading

I aced AP United States History, AP Art History, English Composition I & II, Public Speaking, and British Literature I & II all while still in high school. I aced numerous writing-intensive courses in History, Philosophy, Literature, and Political Science in college and in graduate school. I published 3 peer-reviewed research articles and 3 peer-reviewed book reviews in graduate school.

Writing

I aced 15 credit hours of college-level English courses and 6 credit hours of college-level History courses in high school (and 8 credit hours of college-level Science courses too!). I published 6 peer-reviewed works in academic research journals.
