About Alexandra

I believe that all students have an inherent curiosity and love of learning, and that this love can be fostered through a creative and individualized learning environment.

I believe that words have great power. Writing well is not just a skill needed in the classroom and workplace, but a tool that can enrich the way we think, study, and communicate. Similarly, I believe that music is a language that penetrates boundaries and challenges us to truly live an enriched life.

I teach writing, reading, violin, and related subjects with attention to my students’ unique goals and challenges. I devote great effort to preparing for each session in order to provide my students with the greatest opportunities for success.

I am a graduate of the University of Utah with an Honors B.A. in English and minors in Music and Korean Studies. For more details about specific qualifications, please click on a subject below or send me a message. I look forward to answering your questions and helping you achieve your ambitions.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I received a score of 35 out of 36 on the English portion of the ACT. I have tutored several students specifically on ACT English prep and many others with learning the fundamentals of English grammar, rhetoric, and organization. I am an Honors English graduate from the University of Utah.

ACT Reading

I received a score of 31 out of 36 on the ACT Reading test in high school, and have since acquired additional skills and test taking strategies through my Honors English degree from the University of Utah. I have tutored several students specifically in ACT and many others in reading.

English

I have worked as a writer for several newspapers (The Standard Examiner and The Daily Utah Chronicle) as well as a worldwide organization. I won the runner-up award for Utah State English Sterling Scholar and have been accepted twice to present at the National Undergraduate Literature Conference. I graduate in December with my Honors B.A. in English and love helping others develop and fine tune their writing abilities.

Grammar

I have an Honors English B.A. from the University of Utah and devoted an entire semester to the study of grammar. I am a freelance writer and editor with a good eye for detail, and have experience teaching grammar to ESL individuals in South Korea. I believe that learning to identify patterns and receiving frequent, sound feedback are crucial elements in mastering all facets of the English language.

Korean

I lived in South Korea for 16 months as a volunteer missionary. While in the country I lived with native Korean speakers and studied and taught in the Korean language every day.
I graduated in December 2016 with a minor in Korean Studies from the University of Utah. I have taken the following classes, receiving an A grade in each: Korean 3200 (business language), Korean 3100 (Korean culture through literature), Korean 3060 (third year language studies), and Korean 3070 (Korean through Chinese character studies).
I am currently enrolled in Korean 4900 (advanced reading and conversation), the highest Korean language class offered by the University of Utah.
I have worked at the international, non-profit organization translating Korean video tutorials into English scripts.

Literature

I have worked as a writer for several newspapers (The Standard Examiner and The Daily Utah Chronicle) as well as a worldwide organization. I won the runner-up award for Utah State English Sterling Scholar and have been accepted twice to present at the National Undergraduate Literature Conference. I graduate in December with my Honors B.A. in English and love helping others develop and fine tune their writing abilities.

Reading

I have an Honors English degree from the University of Utah . I have tutored elementary aged children with reading, substituted as a homeschool teacher, and assisted high school and college students with written papers that analyze the literary works of various authors.

Violin

I have studied the violin for over 18 years from private teachers and from the University of Utah (music minor). I grew up playing in several youth groups and orchestras, and was concert master of my middle and high school orchestras. I enjoyed four years with the University Campus Symphony at the University of Utah and currently teach two private violin students.

Writing

I have worked as a writer for several newspapers (The Standard Examiner and The Daily Utah Chronicle) as well as the worldwide organization FamilySearch. I won the runner-up award for Utah State English Sterling Scholar and have been accepted twice to present at the National Undergraduate Literature Conference. I graduate in December with my Honors B.A. in English and love helping others develop and fine tune their writing abilities.
