Brigham Young University Provo, Utah (French Studies)
Bonjour! My name is Lauren. I am a recent university graduate living in Salt Lake. I grew up in Colorado, but came back to Utah after graduating from BYU-Provo. I have been learning French in some capacity since I was eight years old and intensively for the past nine years. I love the French language and francophone cultures. I studied French and Political Science at BYU. I completed two summers of an internship working with the elderly in Dunkerque, France while still a student as well as a six-week English teaching program in Léogâne, Haïti. I worked for two years as a French 101 teacher while finishing my bachelor's. I have also worked for Apartment Investment and Management Company as a Communications intern. After graduation, I spent three and a half months studying literature and history in London with BYU. Since moving back to Utah, I have worked as a French instructor teaching absolute beginner to intermediate courses to US Special Forces soldiers.
As I said, I love studying culture. I have special places in my heart reserved for music, art, literature, and especially food! I love the outdoors and make the most of my free time running and hiking through Greater Salt Lake. I am known for being a very passionate conversationalist and love exploring subjects in politics, literature, and cuisine. I highly value communication and strive to develop the skills of my students as well as my own skills through teaching. I teach using proficiency-based learner-centered lessons in full immersion as much as possible. I have taught many different kinds of classes and students and am always ready for a new challenge.
Advanced High (ACTFL) on Oral Proficiency Interview (2015)
4 (ILR) on CL-150 Reading Language Proficiency Test (2016)
4 semesters teaching French 101 at BYU with average class size of 15 students
4 months living in Dunkerque, France on internship with main duty being conversation with elderly
8 months teaching absolute beginner to intermediate courses to US Special Forces soldiers with classes ranging from 1-6 students
Understanding of both ILR and ACTFL scales and experience teaching geared toward OPI and general communication
Continued study (visits to France in both 2015 and 2016) to improve grammar and cultural understanding
I have also dedicated a lot of time to studying other languages (mainly Haitian Creole and Swedish) so I know how it feels to be a beginner.
I would love to get to share my knowledge of the french language with you and help you to come to understand and love it as much as I do. Please feel free to get in touch so we can schedule a lesson! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
