About Stefanie

Hi! I’m a 2nd-year Pre-Nursing student at the University of Utah. At the moment, I’m currently enrolled in pathophysiology, medical microbiology, and nutrition, finishing up pre-requisite courses in preparation to apply to nursing school.

I’m a Biology TA at the University of Utah for this semester, and I highly enjoy finding diversified ways to teach key concepts to people with different learning styles. Teaching academic material, even casually with friends, is something that I find very personally rewarding not just because it reinforces and builds upon my personal knowledge, but also because it makes me feel happy to be able to help other people establish conceptual foundations from which they can enrich their academic lives. I feel that students need to have a positive outlook on education that promotes self-growth, confidence and hard work. I want students to back up their academic ambitions with the proper motivation and drive. These goals are some of the things that back up my teaching philosophy, which is to support educational goals by encouraging a growth mindset and a lifestyle that incorporates learning on an everyday basis. If there is a strong mental foundation, students can build knowledge that facilitates the accumulation of new knowledge on an exponential level, which is an amazing thing that I hope students can experience and value.

Having taken an ample amount of science courses in the past, including a number of AP courses (including biology, chemistry, psychology, and less relevant courses that include English, language and literature) and concurrent enrollment courses (a wide array of math and biology/chemistry/biochemistry courses) throughout middle school and high school in addition to my collegiate career, I’m well-versed in general biology and chemistry. I’m also more than qualified to instruct in basic math and Algebra I (received a 5 on the AP test for Calculus AB).

I have a rather deep-rooted relationship with math, since it was just a pivotal part of my pre-collegiate career. My first experience with a higher-level math course was when I was enrolled in a community college Algebra course the summer of 4th grade (from the results of a placement test that my young self was really happy to receive), and it never really stopped from there. It went from Algebra I to Algebra II, to Trigonometry, Geometry, and so on and so forth until graduation. I would never pursue a math-based career, but my math background is definitely there.

I love Biology and Chemistry and have been highly involved in a series of essential courses for conceptual groundwork and development for a long period of time. I've taken General Biology, General Chemistry, and Elementary Biochemistry classes in college that I had no problem understanding conceptually and to some extent, thoroughly enjoyed. This knowledge was supplemented and reinforced previous knowledge that I accumulated through AP courses back in high school. From there, I have continued to build my way up to higher-level courses that further build upon the foundation that I have worked to build these past years.

I would be more than happy to answer any further questions that you might have! I do have a set schedule and obligations on top of my everyday schoolwork, but let me know when you're available, and I can definitely try to be flexible to accommodate for whenever you're free to meet.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
