About Stephen

I've acquired a vast amount of experience in my thirteen years of teaching, working in Ireland, Spain and Argentina, and in that time I've taught a wide range of students of all ages and backgrounds, as well as becoming a fluent Spanish speaker. I look forward to new and exciting experiences here in Salt Lake City!

About my tailor-made courses - for small groups or tutorials - student targets and needs are identified and explained at the very beginning. There will be an emphasis on language and communication in classes, using up-to-date pedagogical material. I believe that class project work is a fantastic way for students to get involved with and learn from up-to-date material of interest, and this is the perfect way to engage with the full use of some excellent online or technological tools. Communication is fundamental for any course of study and from the very beginning I create an in depth network of contact that enables better access inside and outside of the classroom. I don't really believe that one end-of-course exam is the best way to monitor progress so I implement a system of continual evaluation. I really enjoy helping students prepare for international exams, it's always a great pleasure for me to accompany them on that journey.

I have years of experience of every type of course and exam (preparation) - Cambridge, IELTS, TOEFL - both full-year courses and intensive. I've managed summer schools and designed courses for students from Elementary-Proficiency levels, when running my own language school for four years before moving to the US. I have experience in teacher training and have attended many excellent courses in the field of teaching methodologies and pedagogy.

I also cater for individuals who need help to prepare for business trips, speeches and international conferences. This work can be direct and short-term in nature in order to get the desired results.

For me it is important to create the appropriate environment in which students feel relaxed and happy to make their best effort to advance. I like to have some light music on in the background and I like to offer refreshments and (sometimes home made) snacks to my students during the class. I believe this helps to generate a nice vibe among students and their teacher. I love to use multimedia too and see it as a wonderful way for students to engage and learn new and interesting language. I'm always looking for new and exciting ways in which the student experience can be improved.

I truly believe I have had success as a teacher because I am a committed to each and every student both in and out of the classroom. For me, anything less will not do.

You will find me an open, friendly and approachable person - and a committed tutor - and I look forward to hearing from you so I can design an appropriate course and guide you to your goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have over a dozen years of experience to students of all ages, levels and backgrounds, teaching in four different countries. I have used multiple methodologies and have devised courses and exams and have experience in teaching management.

IELTS

I have taught IELTS intensive courses in Dublin, Ireland and in Argentina, to groups and private students.
Extensive exam training took place prior to the exam, using an exam preparation book, and this was particularly important for the listening and speaking parts of the test.
