About Jacob

From teasing out ideas to the final edit, writing requires a variety of skills. If an academic essay or personal statement vexes you, I feel your pain and I can help.

I am a great sounding board. Working with me, students will improve their writing and find writing more fun. Writing takes a critical eye and a creative mind and it is hard to activate both of these at the same time. I will help tie ideas together, structure thoughts and provide vocabulary. I edit grammar well. I aim to help students get better grades and increase their confidence.

I am trained in academic writing and screenwriting and would claim specialty in writing personal statements, like for college applications. I've taught English, have had appointments writing company newsletters and I have also written and produced short documentary films. I have a BS in Anthropology and a BA in Film from the University of Utah.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I have a Bachelors of Science in Anthropology from the University of Utah. My particular areas of interest include: medical anthropology, public health, global health, visual anthropology, ethnobotany, Eastern Europe, Alaska, and homeless populations. As research assistant, I contributed to Anthropology Journals on Virulence of Plague in Russian speaking countries.

English

I taught English as a second language for 2.5 years. I recently completed a two-year creative writing program at the University of Utah where I participated in weekly workshops with 15 other writers, offering criticism on their work and sharing my own. These courses also included reading several books on literature, guides, and anthologies.
