“**Exceptional Math Tutor**”

From '09 to '13 I taught math full-time at a high school in Maryland (from 8th graders to seniors), after having graduated from the College of William and Mary in 2009 with a BS in Applied Mathematics. During my time teaching I

Steve has worked with my son for just 2 sessions and helped him raise his AP Calculus test grades from a very low grade to a B. Steve is very knowledgeable of the material, methodical in the teaching and extremely engaging in how he teaches the material. Steve's approach is to explain and then go through the process systematically, asking questions at each step to ensure of his understanding. At the same time, Steve's relative youth makes the sessions comfortable and relaxing for my son. He truly enjoys working with Steve and his confidence in the material has increased exponentially.

Finally, Steve makes my part easy with his quick response time to emails and willingness to text directly with my son to arrange sessions.

I highly recommend Steve as a math tutor!

Stephen has been such a wonderful tutor for my son! Alex feels comfortable with Stephen and indicates Stephen teaches concepts clearly and understandably. We will continue to call Stephen as Alex moves from precalc to AP calc 1 & 2 next year!

Stephen has helped tremendously with all aspects of pre calculus honors. He has no learning, but teaches concepts easily.

Thanks again Stephen.

Mean value theorem, related rate problems, finding volumes from curves, fundamental theorem o f calculus, derivatives of inverse.

Accomplishment: I'm able to solve any problems in these topics . Thanks Mr. H.

Really helped me this semester. Teaches the material so you can understand it. Highly recommend Stephen. Willing to meet at very flexible schedule.

Stephen is on time, patient, kind, and extremely knowledgeable.

My son was getting terrible grades on his math tests. He just received his first A.

His confidence in math has completely changed.

We are thrilled!

Stephen is a great tutor. He takes his time and adapts to the learn styling of the individual. I appreciate his thoroughness as we go through the material.

Steve was great in helping my high school daughter understand difficult material for her BC Calculus class. We had him over for a 2-hour session. He was very personable and knowledgeable, and he easily and clearly explained the concepts and theorems that were giving my daughter problems. I (and my daughter) recommend him highly. Unfortunately, Steve informed us that he was moving away from the area (Falls Church), or we would definitely have arranged additional tutoring sessions with him.

Stephen responded quickly to email and requested information on what we were studying so he could come prepared. He is on time and my child responded well to his teaching style. He showed different options to get to the answer so my child could understand the best way that would work for him.

My daughter was having issues understanding derivatives, she had worked with several peer mentors at GMU. After working with Stephen she was so happy. She thought maybe she had to change majors because she couldn't understand this topic and thus future topics were going to cause her issues too. She said he didn't just use example from the textbook but made up his own examples and then graphed them for her. It made so much more sense and she wants him to review the entire semester with her so that she can ace her final exam.

My daughter immediately felt comfortable with Stephen and felt he was very easy to interact with. They went over topics for an upcoming test and she said that she "was finally beginning to understand proofs." Stephen is easy to get in touch with and flexible with his scheduling time. My daughter is looking forward to working with Stephen.

Steve walked my daughter through a difficult discussion on derivatives and helped her approach the problems from a different angle. He showed her a trick using clear plastic cups to simplify the derivative solution process and come to an answer more quickly. She rapidly caught on to the new technique and is now so excited about it that she is planning to show her Calculus teacher at school! We're looking forward to future sessions with Steve, who is very approachable and pleasant.

Went step by step for each problem explaining the problem as we went along. Very patient and let me do some problems without help then he reviewed the problem and if I had anything wrong, he told me what and how to correct it.

Approved subjects are in **bold**.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

The ACT math test includes content from pre-algebra up to trigonometry. These are subject areas that I am very familiar with and comfortable tutoring. The test requires a breadth of math knowledge which my teaching background has prepared me to tutor.

Algebra 1 is a subject area that I am very familiar tutoring. I taught and lived at a boarding school where the students in my residence hall were mostly 8th and 9th graders taking Algebra and I would help tutor them regularly.

Having taught Calculus and Precalculus, I came across many Algebra 2 topics which I am confident in teaching or tutoring. It can be a tricky subject without a firm understanding of trigonometry, algebra I, and geometry all of which I am very familiar with. I would be able to put together additional problems and/or resources pertaining to the topic being tutored.

I taught AP Calculus AB for four years. During that time, 51% of my students received 5s on the AP exam (the highest score possible) and the average of all my students' scores was 4.2. I have attended numerous AP Calculus conferences to pick up clever ideas to convey concepts. I work to have students break down problems into manageable parts and work through them on their own.

I taught Geometry at the high school level for 3 years and am very familiar working with students one-on-one outside of class. I have many Geometry resources and would be able to put together practice problem packets for any student that I would be tutoring. The use of interactive software, which I have on my laptop, can be helpful in making connections in problems.

Having taught high school math for years I am very familiar with all of the concepts of Prealgebra. One of my strengths as a teacher and tutor is an ability to break down problems into smaller and more manageable parts and concepts. This is a skill that would allow me to explain the topics of Prealgebra well. It is a critical subject area, as all of future math courses seek to build upon its foundations.

Having taught Precalculus for 1 year and Calculus for 4 years, I am very familiar with the subject material. With a solid understanding of Calculus, I would be able to help explain how some of the topics will be relevant in the student's future math courses. I can also help them navigate their TI calculator to effectively set up problems.

Having taken numerous probability and statistics courses as an undergraduate in college, probability is a subject area that I am familiar with. I have recently been studying a statistics textbook from college to brush up on the material. I am especially comfortable with dice and poker probabilities

Having taught a range of courses from Geometry up to AP Calculus AB, I have a wide range of experience in teaching and tutoring across many math topics - an ideal SAT math tutor. Having studied Applied Mathematics at William and Mary, I have a firm background in a variety of math subject areas. I would be happy to put together SAT Math practice problem packets as well.

Having taken multiple statistics classes in college, I have been exposed to a wide variety of statistical concepts. Furthermore, I have recently worked through a statistics textbook on my own to brush up on concepts. I have tutored numerous students in the basics of statistics and probability.

Having taught Precalculus (with a large amount of trigonometric topics), I would not only be able to help students understand Trigonometry, but also understand what types of real-world problems that it can be used to solve. It can be a difficult subject area to understand and visualize, but I would work to explain and visually demonstrate what is happening in Trigonometry. I have a number of resources available to put together practice problems.
