About Lauren

Hey there!

If you're reading this, you're probably stressed out and trying to find the right person to help you in your endeavors. You need someone personable, but professional. Affordable, but experienced. Allow me to lay out my teaching philosophy without embellishment: I connect with students, help them articulate their goals, and set practical plans to achieve them.

Simple right?

With over 11 years of teaching and tutoring experience outside of Wyzant, I've found my philosophy allows students to learn with personal focus and enthusiasm. With the clarity of my students' goals and plans, I adapt my teaching in fun and creative ways to meet their needs through studies with practical application that cement comprehension. I believe in guiding and preparing my students in a way that inspires self-confidence and independence when I'm not there. In short, I teach people, not lessons. If my philosophy appeals to you, or you have further questions, please reach out to me so we can connect. I've also provided my qualifications below for your convenience.

Best wishes and kindest regards,

Lauren

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

Lesson #1: (And I learned this the hard way...) CLARITY IS POWER.

Actually, I would say, that's the first, last, and every-in-between lesson for anything you pursue.

As a Presidential Ambassador for Southern Utah University, I was a friendly and personal resource for future students as they explored their options for attending college. I could ramble on about how I've helped over 150 students learn to set clear goals and make practical plans for how to achieve their dreams, but I won't.

My goal is to help you figure out what you're passionate about, what you want to pursue, and how to do that with focus and clarity BEFORE you're indenturing yourself through student loans.

So, what are you waiting for? Schedule a session! Your dreams are awaiting!

ESL/ESOL

Learning a new language can be intimidating. Especially if you want to actually be able to converse with native speakers! (I've had my fair share of blunders, mishaps, and miscommunications in other languages, and guess what? Those experiences PROPELLED my understanding.) I teach students in a way that encourages lots of questions, practical application, and a safe environment to fail and try again.

I've trained over 100 students with little to no history with the Spanish language, and within 6-9 weeks, 100% of them were able to have a meaningful conversation with a native speaker. I use those same techniques to teach the English Language.

So, schedule a session, and let's get learning!

Literature

Here are three pivotal moments in my life that cement the assertion I am a nerd (and who you want in your corner when it comes to literature):
1. I once was grounded from books as a kid. (Yes. That actually happened. And it was a dark day, indeed.)
2. I made a cd with songs that backed my claims for my final essay when I was in the 11th grade. (I don't recommend that, although my teacher loved it. My cheeks are turning red just admitting this. You better appreciate it.)
3. My professor of Writing Literary Criticism, Dr. Lorraine Wood, wrote on my final: "You are a strong writer with excellent analytic skills who likes to look at things from unusual perspectives. (Which is good!) Your analysis is excellent and demonstrates your skill in working with the text."

So, there you have it! Schedule a session, and I vow to use my nerdy powers for your good.

Reading

Lesson #1: "Anyone who doesn't like to read has simply not read the right book." - Me
Lesson #2: "Only connect." - E.M. Forster

I learned lesson number one ridiculously easy and at a precociously young age. I learned lesson number two the hard way as I trudged through 800+ paged books on Critical Theory of the English Language at university. (Gross.) Or is it? ... dun, dun, dun. I actually learned to connect with academic babble in a way that challenged and enhanced my view of the world. And I hold an appreciation for it, albeit grudgingly.

Here's my promise to you, dear reader: I will delight in helping you find the right books, and I will savor in helping you connect with the ones you're required to read.

Let the read-athon begin! (Oh no, my nerd is showing.) Quick! Schedule a session!

Spanish

Learning a new language can be intimidating. Especially if you want to actually be able to converse with native speakers! (I've had my fair share of blunders, mishaps, and miscommunications, and guess what? Those experiences PROPELLED my understanding.) I teach students in a way that encourages lots of questions, practical application, and a safe environment to fail and try again. I've trained over 100 students with little to no history with the Spanish language, and within 6-9 weeks, 100% of them were able to have a meaningful conversation with a native speaker.

I've also trained over 50 Spanish teachers on how to connect with their students more meaningfully, as well as how to teach the language more effectively. I was chosen to help open up a Spanish language training center in Benemerito, Mexico, and I could babble on to impress you, but I'd rather just hablar contigo.

So, schedule a session! You bring the tacos, I'll bring the Spanish, and we'll meet in the middle to share. Deal?

Tennis

I can teach ANYONE five to five-hundred-years-old how to score, serve, have fun, and talk smack when it comes to tennis. I could dither on about my glory days... how I competed in statewide tournaments and medaled, or how I taught tennis for Brigham City's Recreation Program, but I'd rather school you in a game of tennis! So, go on! Schedule a session. Game on! Love all!

Writing

I'm that person who notices when newspapers spell something wrong. And when I read a book, I write in the missing grammar, correct typos, and scribble commentary in the margins. I've used this extraordinary savviness for detail to help writers of all stages improve their work, not only with grammar, but structure and cohesiveness as well. I could babble on pretentiously about how I've helped hundreds of writers over the course of ten years to fix essays, memoirs, or works of fiction, but I won't. Schedule a session and let me help you evolve as a writer.
