Elementary (K-6th)

I am a licensed elementary teacher who has successfully completed an undergraduate program, taught in the elementary school for ten years, was a principal over elementary schools for 10 years, and oversaw elementary literacy in a large school district for 11 years. After 31 years I retired from the Granite School District and now tutor and teach university courses for aspiring teachers and principals.

I have a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction. I have taught math at the elementary level for ten years.
Phonics,

Phonics

I have a Ph.D. with a specialization in Reading. Taught explicit, systematic, synthetic phonics for over 31 years. In addition to teaching students i have taught synthetic, analytic and analogy phonics methods for reading specialists and special education teachers. I also teach graduate reading classes for teachers who are earning their reading endorsements.

Reading

I have a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction with a specific focus on reading and language arts. I am licensed and hold a basic and advanced reading endorsement from the USOE. I was the Curriculum Director over K-12 reading in a large district including classroom teachers, reading specialists, reading coaches and all reading intervention programs for 11 years. I have provided extensive professional learning for teachers of ESOL students, teachers of Special Education Students (Dyslexia, Reading Difficulties), and general classroom teachers. I have been a principal supervising reading/language arts for 10 years.
Spelling,

Spelling

As an elementary grade teacher I have developed a deep understanding of the phonetic structure of the English Language. As students understand the patterns, spelling, for the most part, becomes very logical. An understanding of the Greek and Latin bases is very helpful for older students who are learning to spell content words. I use systematic phonics instruction to support spelling strategy implementation, Words Their Way, and other teaching resources to develop an understanding of spelling.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

The key to teaching vocabulary is to identify words that are critical for understanding text (referred to as Tier 2 words). Once words have been identified for the student I teach them how to use context clues, how to recognize when the author has supported understanding of new vocabulary and word part meanings to develop understanding. I gained this knowledge when I completed a reading endorsement program at Utah State University as a part of my Ph.D. program and through 31+ years of teaching.

Carla is a wonderful tudor

Carla has worked with our 9 yr old for just over a month now and her focus to his specific needs is impressive. Our son has actually enjoyed his time at their tutoring sessions and has improved noticeably. She is a professional tudor and knows her stuff.

Amazing

My son struggled with reading and I was nervous about advancing to the second grade and getting further behind. He made amazing progress with Carla. She knew exactly how to work with him. Carla was fantastic and we are now in a better position to advance to the second grade!

Patient and works hard

Good tutor who is very knowledgeable about reading issues/difficulties with kids with ADHD. Has lots of "pearls" to pass along. Gets my son to read more than I ever have.
