About Josiah

Personable, challenging, persistent and fun are four ways I would describe myself and my teaching standards. Be it in Music, specifically Drums, English Language Tutoring, or Biblical Studies, I always accord my students culture and experience with the highest respect. To present any subject is an honor as I get to share part of myself with someone of similar interest. I intend for them to receive at each session a deepened passion for the subject and ability to work with it. Taught in a stress free and welcoming environment, each will be respected as individuals and challenged to learn with others as well as independently. It is my hope that each student has a support system in place by friends and family to encourage and take interest in their education.

My intent is to build on the student’s interest, and dependent upon age, the effort of parents and/or family. As my motto, the above statement became my mission as I began my career in education as the forming director of a Children’s Program at a Church in my home state of Utah. A parent myself, it is my goal that Children/Young Adults be given the opportunity to achieve their dreams in partnership with the parents and families to train, encourage and inspire. This goal has become even more resolute with my experience in Public Education as a Para-professional for Special Needs Children in Leavenworth, KS. My purpose is to enable both student and family by providing a welcoming, respectful and stress-free environment built on trust and interest. Again depending upon age, re-affirm and reinforce the parent/child relationship as I endeavor to share with both my knowledge and experience in the sought after field.

For Language Acquisition I do whatever the student is comfortable with, whether it be a formal or informal approach. I can design lessons based on the student’s needs, or provide a casual experience through interests and/or daily activities. Either way the goal will be to enable a practical, conversational use of language in both written and interactive form. From writing letters to going shopping, so the individual can feel confident in their ability to use English effectively in any situation they may have on a regular basis. Even provide free resources and materials to enhance the learning experience from a book and/or technological platform.

As a former Youth and Children's Pastor, I am always eager to help anyone understand the Bible better. In the past I have taught any number of persons from child to adult on a wide range of Biblical Subjects. There is no set translation I use, though I personally default to New International Version (NIV). My doctrinal focus is from an Evangelical Protestant Christian perspective. Though I have had a few LDS (Mormon) students. My specific goal is to see anyone's Biblical knowledge grounded on knowing Jesus Christ better. Again, out of respect toward a person’s culture and experience the intent is to aid NOT judge. I have had Christians who are mature in their faith as students to new believers. As a non-licensed, non-academically trained counselor, I have helped persons with suicidal tendencies, emotional issues, non-believers, believers and same-sex orientation incorporate a biblical, Christ perspective into their situation.

Let me state for the record I am not certified by any board or recognized organization as a language teacher. I am a Magna Cum Laude undergraduate with a degree in Applied Linguistics with an emphasis in ESL/TESOL from Ashford University. I am also a Cum Laude Associate of Science in Linguistics & Language with emphasis in Elementary Chinese and Elementary French from Salt Lake Community College.

I have worked for several Christian organizations and churches associated with Non-denominational, Inter-denominational, Baptist, Southern Baptist, Four Square and Lutheran. For a short time I was an online non-degree seeking student at Moody Bible Institute. Over the years I have taken numerous courses and classes at both college and non-college level on various Biblical subjects.

Please do not hesitate in contacting me with any questions you may have.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I have attended Moody Bible Institute, Liberty University, Dallas Theological Seminary and have taken college level classes through various other organizations for biblical studies. Working as a Youth pastor, Children's pastor, Worship leader and Christian Counselor has helped me better understand and express the bible in a practical and applicable method. Particularly to individual knowledge levels, needs and direct questions. In addition, I have taught various classes in church and non church settings on biblical history, geography, characters and message. All from an evangelical protestant perspective in multiple denomination settings.

ESL/ESOL

My associate and undergraduate studies were in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics with an emphasis in ESL/TESOL. Degree objectives was to development a curriculum and practicum for teaching English as a Second Language. In National Parks I was a able to use these skills to help non-English speaking co-workers learn English, as well as, foreign students at a local University.
