About Michael

When I started my bachelor's degree in math, I made extensive use of tutoring services. As I became more proficient in the basics and moved on to higher math courses, I felt that I could offer superior tutoring to students using what I had learned, not only about math, but about how to teach it. After receiving my B.S. In mathematics from the U in 2012, I began tutoring, and have been ever since! Later, when I returned to school for a graduate degree in music, I completed coursework in pedagogy, giving me further insight into how people learn best.

I also teach music and the saxophone to both beginning and advancing students, starting with the basics of tone production, technical facility on the instrument, and sight-reading, moving into more advanced concepts geared toward the aspiring improviser. Whenever I teach, I take into account the specific musical goals, strengths, and weaknesses of each student in order to create a plan that will help them achieve their ambitions and create the music they love to play. I want to pass on the knowledge I gained in earning my master of music degree at the U.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Saxophone

Michael has played saxophone professionally with many groups in the Mountain West, spanning a wide variety of genres. He leads the soul-jazz group Mountain Boogaloo, and is currently completing his masters degree in jazz performance and composition at the University of Utah.
