About Paul

Parents and students,

I've been an adjunct instructor at Salt Lake Community College for two years. I teach Math 900, 920, 950 and 990 classes. My college degree is as a math teacher. Of course, I'm capable of tutoring other classes, including Math 1010, geometry and trigonometry. I've also been an editor, so I know about writing, too. See below, please.

If your son or daughter is struggling in high school math, algebra, geometry or trigonometry, I'd love a chance to help your student gain the confidence and skills to keep up with the class and excel. The goal of tutoring won't be to act in place of the classroom teacher, but to build on what your student is learning in class. The value of tutoring is that we can work on specific skills your student needs, rather than just following along the classroom lessons.

Bear in mind this, please: Your student must open to succeed and motivated to study. Your student must take some responsibility for learning. I'll be glad to tutor for study groups, too, and will reduce my rate to keep the tutoring sessions affordable for everyone.

I want your son or daughter to succeed. I want your son or daughter to say: Math isn't so bad.

For students who have papers due, I'd love to help you. I have 14 years experience as a copy editor, reading stories for publication, preparing layouts and writing headlines. As for tutoring writing students, I can best help you polish your papers before you turn them in. I'll check the grammar, help you format footnotes, spot check your facts and make sure the paper makes sense. Then, I'll help coach you so you understand how to make your papers better next time. I do not ghost write papers for you.

Good luck in your classes. Please contact me through WyzAnt so I can help you or your student.

Thanks,
Paul

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Photography

I have more than 18 years as a newspaper and commercial photographer, and I still work as a freelance lighting assistant. I am skilled shooting both film and digital images in 35 mm, medium format and 4x5 platforms. I have experience developing and printing in black and white or color, and significant experience using digital darkrooms, primarily Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. I believe in teaching fundamental technical skills (shutter speed, aperture, light sensitivity, manual focus), and at the same time, teaching how to communicate visually.
