I'm a lover of everything English and language-based! I graduated in English with a French minor and have a TESOL certificate, Utah secondary teaching certificate, and ESL Endorsement. I have taught ESL for twenty-two years and directed a non-profit ESL school for refugees, immigrants, and visitors to the U.S. during that time. Enthusiasm, caring, and thoroughness are my best qualities. My knowledge and enjoyment of English grammar, reading, phonics, writing, and conversation skills are deep and clearly transmitted to others. I lived six years overseas so also speak Portuguese and Spanish very well and understand the difficulties of adjustment to a new culture. Native English speaker needs are also of great interest!
My heart is in helping people of all nationalities to achieve their potential personally and professionally. My tutoring methods combine working with a student's specific textbooks, if any, and bringing individualized new texts or test-prep materials to resolve questions and eliminate deficits. If the need is advancing ESL conversation, writing, or life skills, I build on the current ability level by practicing together on both daily-life and academic topics. I would love to work with you! My rate is $30/hr., but if two or more people want to study together on the same topic, it will be $20/hr. I want to help you succeed!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I can help you progress in such ACT skills as making comparisons and generalizations, sequence of events, general prose understanding, tone and voice, and your own specific questions on this topic.
Your English studies can focus on what you most need or be a careful review of all areas needed. The goal may be to pass a course, be able to graduate or enter a new higher education program, or qualify for a job you are seeking. Grammar rules, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, vocabulary development, and improvement in the various types of composition and essay skills are some of the subjects that we can work on together to meet your goals.
I have both a B.A. in English and a graduate TESOL Certificate and ESL Endorsement in secondary teaching. My intensive, joyful experience with refugees, immigrants, and visitors to the U.S. of all nationalities spans more than 22 years, both at the community-based non-profit adult program where I was the director and in school district programs. I have taught pre-literate to advanced level students from age 17 to 80, in small-group settings. Topics for listening, speaking, reading, and writing ranged from survival skills and citizenship to High School/GED Preparation and job-specific terminology.
Phonics and phonemic awareness are the key to becoming a good reader and speller, who can absorb and enjoy all types of texts, for school, pleasure, or skilled employment. We study carefully the sounds of letters, short and long-vowel or double vowel sounds, diphthongs, the varying consonant sounds and blends, voiced and voiceless consonants, silent letters, and other essentials, at age-appropriate levels. The use of sound/example cards, detailed word pairs and comparisons, basic sight words, and academic vocabulary lists for pronunciation practice enliven this topic to promote quick learning gains!
Proofreading is something I do very well, both because of my university training in English and grammar/usage studies in my TESOL certificate training and because I have always been a very good writer and speller, since early youth. My college papers were the ones that were read out loud to the class! I graduated cum laude from BYU. I also wrote successful grant proposals several times a year in my last job (for 20 years). A former job of mine was as Assistant Editor at BYU Press. I'd love to help you.
My entire work career has involved these topics in depth, both in ESOL and regular English teaching. The majority of it was with adult grammar, phonics, decoding skills, reading and speaking fluency, and writing (from simple sentences to detailed essays). But I have also taught secondary students and had one year as a para-educator with first grade students. I understand, enjoy, and can communicate well the complex issues and techniques involved in these skills and have been told that I am an excellent and fun teacher and friend to each student, of any age. An added benefit is that I wrote very detailed state and federal grants for 20 years, which brought in many thousands of dollars for the agency I worked for.
