In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. I have taught pre-literate to advanced level students from age 17 to 80, in small-group settings. Phonics and phonemic awareness are the key to becoming a good reader and speller, who can absorb and enjoy all types of texts, for school, pleasure, or skilled employment. We study carefully the sounds of letters, short and long-vowel or double vowel sounds, diphthongs,the varying consonant sounds and blends, voiced and voiceless consonants, silent letters, and other essentials, at age-appropriate levels. The use of sound/example cards, detailed word pairs and comparisons, basic sight words,and academic vocabulary lists for pronunciation practice enliven this topic to promote quick learning gains!
Proofreading is something I do very well, both because of my university training in English and grammar/usage studies in my TESOL certificate training and because I have always been a very good writer and speller, since early youth. My college papers were the ones that were read out loud to the class! I graduated cum laude from BYU. I also wrote successful grant proposals several times a year in my last job (for 20 years). My entire work career has involved these topics in depth, both in ESOL and regular English teaching. The majority of it was with adult grammar, phonics, decoding skills, reading and speaking fluency, and writing (from simple sentences to detailed essays). But I have also taught secondary students and had one year as a para-educator with first grade students. I understand, enjoy, and can communicate well the complex issues and techniques involved in these skills and have been told that I am an excellent and fun teacher and friend to each student, of any age. An added benefit is that I wrote very detailed state and federal grants for 20 years, which brought in many thousands of dollars for the agency I worked for.
