In college, I could not make up my mind on a degree so I took many courses. I began as an Elementary Education Major but graduated with a Psychology Major so I could start a Masters Program in School Counseling. I also have a second degree in Health Promotion with a Wellness emphasis. What this means to you is that I have a diverse educational background in the physical and health sciences, general education (reading, math, writing), and behavioral or social sciences. I am skilled in writing, computer basics, and study skills.

I currently teach college level career and study skills as well as psychology courses. I have more than ten years of experience in assisting in school setting as well as working with special populations (SED, AXIS I & II ).

Career Development

The School Counselor program prepares us to engage in Career Development; to help people learn more about themselves and develop a career path. In addition to a M.S. degree, I have seven years of applied experience having helped individuals connect with an employer, write resumes, cover letters, take interest inventories, and change employers. Currently I teach Strategies for Success and Career Skills at the college level. Strategies for success are a course that focuses on developing self-awareness and skills to promote success in college and the workplace. The Career Skills course expands on these skills to advance individuals into a career by learning networking, interviewing, job searching, and financial planning skills. Both of these courses have strengthened my knowledge, understanding, and ability to help others acquire these skills. The transitioning age is challenging for most of us and with the economy as it is, there is a lot of competition. Good presentation of your resume and cover letter is necessary to get the interview, but before you get to this point, you must learn about your strengths, interests, and identify your skills. I have assisted many in this self-awareness journey and taught them practical skills for gaining meaningful employment.

Elementary (K-6th)

I meet the qualifications to tutor K-6 students based on academic and professional experiences. My academic background includes a school counseling certification, with academic support and group work elements. The childhood learning techniques and theories are the same for school counselors and K-6 teachers, although subjects taught, vary. In addition to this advanced training, I majored in elementary education for two years during under graduate education. During this time, I created lesson plans and completed courses in various subjects. Professionally, I worked 10 or more years with the K-12 age groups, which included in-school support helping with homework completion and attention building. Currently, I teach life span growth and development at the college level, and have an expertise in childhood cognition. Therefore, I have the resources to support academic tutoring for children (K-6).
Study Skills

Study Skills

I currently teach Strategies for Success to college students. This course prepares students to study well, access virtual resources, write using APA style, and how to think critically about any given topic. Other skills included time management, test taking, reading comprehension, note taking, presentation development and general office document formatting. As a facilitator I find students can develop these skills within a few weeks and continue to benefit from them over the course of their academic pursuit.

College Counseling

I earned my Masters Degree in School Counseling from Utah State University where I learned how to assist individuals in overcoming challenges and barriers that interfere with their ability to perform their best and meet the expectations and demands of college. I have ten years applied experience in behavior modification in addition to 8 years of education supporting skill development. For the past five years, I have worked in psychosocial rehabilitation; a program designed to help individuals over come challenges that negatively influence thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. In addition, I am familiar with several inventories (such as depression, Myers Briggs, and Strong). I am skilled in interventions for stress management and overall wellness. Finally, I have experience with diversity of all types and have strong ethics for confidentiality and in respect to the scope of my professional boundaries-non clinical.

ADHD,

ADHD

I earned my Master’s degree in school counseling in 2004 and have since worked in special education classroom settings and in psychosocial rehabilitation for the past five years. I have more than 10 years experience working with children, adolescents, and young adults with ADD/ADHD. In the last three years, I have written interventions to assist these individuals with sustaining attention and focus and develop skills to help achieve learning objectives. I believe these students face individual challenges and that to better help them with academics, you must understand how ADD/ADHD affects their learning experience. In closing I try to keep up with the latest research, have access to web resources, and mentors to draw from if I run into a persistent challenge.
