About Joseph

Bio

I'm an Applied Mathematics undergraduate at BYU. During High School, I realized early on that the truly effective teachers are the ones who help their students become academically independent. My experience in college has only corroborated this observation. Do you remember that old proverb about fishing: "give a man a fish and he eats for a day, but teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime." I'm an Applied Mathematics undergraduate at BYU. During High School, I realized early on that the truly effective teachers are the ones who help their students become academically independent. My experience in college has only corroborated this observation. Do you remember that old proverb about fishing: "give a man a fish and he eats for a day, but teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime." I think that's the most important part about tutoring: helping the students develop the skills they need to be successful AFTER the tutor is gone. This means that they'll succeed when it really counts! Tutoring doesn't have to be just a Q&A, it can truly be a time to master the material in a fun and engaging way.

All throughout High School I tutored my peers and even had the opportunity to teach a four-person calculus class during my senior year. During that time, I made sure to schedule times inside and outside of class to answer question, and guide them through more practice problems. That's when I truly discovered the joy of teaching. Now half-way through my degree, I've spent time with high school and college students, helping with Calculus, Linear Algebra, Proof classes, Geometry, Algebra 1 and 2, and ACT Math. Other subjects I specialize in include Spanish, from having lived in Central America for two years, and giving Cello lessons, with ten years of playing experience. I talk often with those whom I met in Central America to keep up my accent and I actively participate in musical groups to this day.

I'm easy to get a hold of and respond quickly. I want to help provide the best tutoring possible to my students so I'm open to suggestions and advice regarding learning styles or teaching methods.
