Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have worked with ADD/ADHD students in many different classrooms. I have a Masters in Elementary Education and Special Education (K-12th). I am certified in Elementary and Special Education in Connecticut.

Algebra 1

I am a highly qualified teacher with a M.S. degree in Elementary Education and Special Education. I have substituted for sixteen years in the public schools, all grade levels and subjects. I am great in math and have tutored basic math, geometry, prealgebra, and Algebra I and II as well as teaching these subjects in middle and high schools.

Algebra 2

I worked in a high school math lab last fall and taught all types of math skills. I just completed teaching Geometry, Honors Algebra II, and PreAlgebra as a long-term substitute at a high school.

Dyslexia

I am a highly-qualified, Connecticut certified teacher with a masters in Elementary Education and a masters in Special Education. I just took the Special Education Praxis Test (5543) to get my certification in Special Education. I have taught students with dyslexia and other learning disabilities, and know instructional strategies to help them learn. I have worked with these students one-on-one, in small groups, and as part of a class.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am certified teacher with a B.S. and M.S. in elementary education as well as a M.S. in special education. I have taught classes from preschool through sixth grade. I enjoy working with students of all ages. My favorite subjects to teach are reading and math, although I have experience teaching social studies, science, health, art, computer, and physical fitness. My education, experience, and excitement to learn makes me a great teacher.

Geometry is one of my favorite math areas and I have worked a lot with high school students in this subject.

Linear Algebra

I have taught in a High School Math Lab where I worked with students at all levels of math, including Geometry, Algegra I and II. I just completed six weeks teaching PreAlgebra, Geometry, and Honors Algebra II at my local high school.

Phonics

I would like to teach Phonics because it is the basis of reading. I taught my children to read using programs such as "Hooked on Phonics". In schools, I have used "Harcout Trophies Reading Program" to teach letters and sounds to young children. Games and music are valuable helps in teaching phonics. I feel confident teaching students phonics.

Praxis

I am a highly-qualified, Connecticut certified teacher who has passed the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators tests (Praxis 1), and the Praxis academic subject tests (Praxis II). I also passed the Special Education: Teaching Students with Behavioral Disorders/Emotional Disturbances test (5372) and just completed the Special Education Core Knowledge and Mild to Moderate Applications test (5543). I have a lot of experience and knowledge with Praxis tests and can teach others how to do well on them.

Prealgebra

I am a highly qualified teacher with a M.S. degree in Elementary Education and Special Education. I am great in math and have tutored privately and in the public schools in basic math, geometry, prealgebra, and Algebra I and II. I am familiar with prealgebra and it's concepts.

Reading

I am a highly-qualified (Masters in Elementary and Special Education), certified teacher. I have worked as a NCLB tutor for the Public Schools. I taught reading, writing, and math to students from K-8th grade. I love reading and taught my own children to read when they were young. I know the skills and strategies children need to succeed in reading.

SAT Math

I am a highly qualified teacher with a M.S. degree in Elementary Education and Special Education. I am great in math and have tutored in basic math, geometry, prealgebra, and Algebra I and II. Recently, I worked in a high school math lab preparing students for SAT and ACT math tests.

Soccer

I have been on soccer teams since I was 3 years old. I played on competitive soccer teams in Connecticut when I was 10-12 years old. During high school, I played on the varsity team from 9th-12th grade. I have been taught by former soccer players and coaches as well as advanced my skills through practice and study.

Special Needs

I have tutored students of all ages in reading, math,and writing. As a substitute teacher for 16 years, I have worked in resource rooms, including many weeks in reading and math labs to help students who struggle in one area or another. I taught sixth grade where I had five special education students in my class. I gave them individual attention and more help on their work. Through diversified instruction and modifying assignments, I helped these students to succeed in school. I am flexible, patient, and an empathetic listener. I take time to explain things completely so that students will understand. I strive to find the right teaching methods to meet the needs of the student. Through patience, persistence, and positive reinforcement, students can accomplish their goals.

Study Skills

As a lifelong student who just completed a second masters in education (this time Special Education), I know how to study and prepare for assessments. I am organized and good at note-taking. The strategies I use in my education will help others to do well in their school work.
