About Matt

Hi. If you're reading this, you're considering hiring me as a tutor. Let me explain why you should.

I have over five years of experience in teaching/tutoring. I have worked at several major test prep companies and have learned their strategies. I have taught students of all ages, from elementary school students to adult police officers. My current specialties are the ACT and SAT.

I got my bachelor’s degree and then graduated cum laude from J. Reuben Clark Law School at BYU. I spent the next few years as a prosecuting attorney, during which I happily contributed to the overcrowding in our county jail systems. At some point I got the idea that I should help students avoid a life of crime altogether by getting high standardized test scores. And so I began focusing more on teaching and tutoring.

Though I’m also a lawyer, my passions are teaching and writing. I am an expert in test prep at all levels. I have taken and mastered standardized tests, including the California Bar Exam (widely considered one of the most difficult exams in the world). I will teach you both the underlying content of the test you're taking AND the skills and strategies to score higher regardless of the content.

There’s something very gratifying about helping students realize their potential. The best teachers and tutors don’t just impart information, but they awaken something inside their students – an "aha" moment, or realization – that helps the students succeed on their own. This is incredibly valuable when students are taking an exam. The teacher can’t be there with them.

I look forward to working with you and helping you achieve your goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

The ACT English section is the easiest section for students to improve quickly. I create an individualized specific outline/study sheet for each student to memorize; doing this gives immediate and lasting results. I have been tutoring and teaching ACT English for about 5 years in both a classroom setting and through individual tutoring. I have worked for multiple national test prep companies, including California's top-rated test prep company, and privately through Wyzant and personal referrals. I know the strategies and materials each student will need to succeed. Let's get started!

ACT Math

The ACT Math section simply requires familiarity and memorization. I let each student I tutor know exactly which formulas to memorize and how common each type of math problem is. Believe it or not, nearly all the ACT math problems can be done with a simple knowledge of algebra and geometry; I will show you how. I have been tutoring and teaching ACT Math for about 5 years in both a classroom setting and through individual tutoring. I have worked for multiple national test prep companies, including California's top-rated test prep company, and privately through Wyzant and personal referrals. I know the strategies and materials each student will need to succeed. Let's get started!

ACT Reading

The ACT Reading section requires three basic skills: quick analysis, keyword matching, and pacing. I observe and determine each student's reading strengths and create drills and exercises to maximize results on the Reading section. I have been tutoring and teaching ACT Reading for about 5 years in both a classroom setting and through individual tutoring. I have worked for multiple national test prep companies, including California's top-rated test prep company, and privately through Wyzant and personal referrals. I know the strategies and materials each student will need to succeed. Let's get started!

ACT Science

The ACT Science section is often the scariest for new students because they don't know what to expect. Believe it or not, this section does not require much science knowledge at all! Rather, it is a reading and data interpretation section. I teach students exactly how to approach each passage and how to interpret the text and data given to find answers without memorizing lots of terminology. I have been tutoring and teaching ACT Reading for about 5 years in both a classroom setting and through individual tutoring. SAT Math

I've taught the SAT in both a classroom setting and through individual and small group tutoring for about 5 years. I have hundreds of hours of experience teaching the test and have mastered it -- both the new and old versions of the test.

The SAT Math section is often feared because of its "tricky" nature. Most people don't realize that the test writers use the same tricks over and over again. Once you're familiar with them, they're no longer tricky -- they're second nature! I teach students all the strategies they will need to score high on this section -- both the Calculator and No Calculator portions. All it takes is a very basic level of math knowledge and some focused practice. Let's get started!

SAT Reading

I've taught the SAT in both a classroom setting and through individual and small group tutoring for about 5 years. I have hundreds of hours of experience teaching the test and have mastered it -- both the new and old versions of the test.

The SAT Reading section is often feared because of the density and "boringness" of the passages, some of which were written over 100 years ago or contain technical terms. Through use of process of elimination, quick review, and context clues, I teach students how to figure out questions without having to be a fan of Victorian literature or particle physics. I teach students all the strategies they will need to conquer passage-based reading and how to understand each type of question the test will throw at them. Let's get started!

SAT Writing

I've taught the SAT in both a classroom setting and through individual and small group tutoring for about 5 years. I have hundreds of hours of experience teaching the test and have mastered it -- both the new and old versions of the test.

The SAT Writing section is my favorite section on the test. I have tutored students who can get almost every question right on this section because they know the grammar rules that are tested over and over again. I also teach students how to outline, format, and compose a high-scoring essay using specific examples and proper thesis development. It's a lot easier than it sounds. Let's get started!

Extremely knowledgeable and encouraging!

I worked with Matt on LSAT tutoring for over 4 months and it was an excellent investment! He went over strategies that were not even outlined in my LSAT course and identified weaknesses in my test taking strategies I did not even know were a problem. He taught me how to manage my time efficiently throughout the test and was always super clear about explaining questions I had on all 3 sections of t
