I believe children learn through hands-on, multi-sensory methods that encourage open ended thinking and an understanding of how processes work. I have searched for and selected some of the most developmentally appropriate, hands-on educational curriculum programs in the nation. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I specialize in working with children on the autism spectrum. I have extensive autism training in Applied Behavioral Analysis, Floortime, and Relationship Development Intervention - which I am becoming certified in this summer. I use a relationship-based intervention approach and focus on developing joint attention skills prior to beginning academic coursework. I do a full developmental evaluation for each child using the Learning Accomplishment Profile 3-D, then plan developmental interventions in each domain of learning. I also address sensory needs using the concept of a "sensory diet" and integrate these activities with academic coursework.
I have a degree in human development with an emphasis in early childhood, which qualifies me to teach children birth to eight. I have taught in a private school up to fifth grade.
I have experience tutoring a six-year-old with hearing impairments, and I know simple signs.
I teach alphabet recognition using the Phonics By Spelling program and literacy skills using The Family Readers series, which I was trained in at a family literacy center. I also use Handwriting Without Tears to reinforce lessons and improve fine motor/handwriting skills.
I am trained in the use of the McComber reading system, which is created for beginning and remedial readers. For children just starting with letter recognition I utilize Phonics By Spelling, which focuses on teaching letter sounds rather than letter names, allowing a seamless integration into reading after the recognition of only seven consonants and one vowel. For older readers I use Phonics Pathways, which breaks down content so it is easy to decode. I also have a structured handwriting program available to supplement the reading skills program.
