About Sharon

Hi!

My name is Sharon F. I am a licensed school teacher (K-8) in Utah. For the past 25 years, I have taught reading and music in many different venues: private/group classes, summer school, church, and charter and public schools. Currently, I am a substitute teacher in the Alpine School District teaching pre-school through accelerated sixth grade classes.

My most important credential is that I love children! I am always excited to track student progress and see them increase their academic and musical abilities. I have designed and implemented curricula and methods to ensure student success.

Because I am employed with the Alpine School District, I have current FBI and state background clearance.

Parent and principal recommendations are available upon your request!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

For 25 years, I have enjoyed teaching professionally as well as being a self-employed tutor. I use varied teaching methods to launch custom plans for each student which define expectations and ensure high net gains. I care deeply about each child's success! Over the years, I have compiled parent and principal recommendations that can be sent upon your request.

I have a B.S. Elementary Education from B.Y.U. (1985) and am a current, licensed teacher in Utah, levels K-8. I have designed and implemented a no-fail, 21-step phonetic reading program targeting the beginning, remedial and English language learner.

I was a kindergarten teacher at Ivy Hall Academy (1993-95) and Challenger School (1991-93). I was also a preschool teacher at Challenger School (1989-91). I was a fifth grade teacher (1/2 year) at Cherry Hill Elementary (2007). I am an Alpine School District substitute teacher (2007 to present,) and an in-home tutor (2005 to present.)

ESL/ESOL

I have tutored ESL/ESOL learners in private and professional settings. I have been employed by the Alpine School District to help remedial students ranging from early elementary through high school age. I employ fast and effective reading strategies that teach both grammatical and conversational English. I enjoy customizing lessons to target each student's and /or adult's needs. However, my best qualification is that I love what I do!

Phonics

I have designed and implemented a no-fail, 21-step phonetic reading program that has proved extremely effective for the beginning, remedial and English language learner. I use varied teaching methods and tailor custom lesson plans to the needs of each student. I care very much about each child's success!

Piano

I have 25 years of experience teaching piano and violin (group and private lessons). I am a former member of the Utah Valley Youth Symphony and Scera Arts Performing Women's' Choir. I have been Director of Music for kindergarten, church, and music graduation programs. I am an accompanist for such, as well. Currently, I am a substitute teacher for music classes (and PreK-6,) in the Alpine School District.

Reading

I have designed and implemented a no-fail, 21-step phonetic reading program that has proved extremely effective for the beginning, remedial and English language learner. I have a B.S. in Elementary Education from B.Y.U. (1985). I am currently licensed in Utah, grades K-8. I was a fifth grade teacher (1/2 year,) at Cherry Hill Elementary (2007). I am a Private tutor, (2005-present) and an Alpine School District substitute teacher, (2007 - present).

I have completed 20 hours of graduate study in elementary education and related fields. Over the past 25 years of my teaching experience, I have compiled parent/principal recommendations which are available upon your request.

Spelling

Knowing the sounds that letters and their combinations make and a few simple phonetic rules, help a struggling speller so much! My approach is using phonics to get the greatest reading/spelling gain.

Violin

I love music and I love children. To pair them, is a dream job! My experience teaching violin is mostly in-home, private lessons. I also see great potential in grouping a small string orchestra together...Summer camp style! Students can be very motivating to each other.

Always Prepared

Sharon has done a wonderful job with our child. He's confidence in his reading has jumped tremendously. The thing I loved most about Sharon is that she was very prepared for each session with our child. Because of this, we were able to take full advantage of her time. Great tutor!!!
