About Rafael

I love church, languages, computers and music. During my high school I learned to play clarinet. Then, I got a bachelor in Theology and another bachelor degree in Modern Languages. After that, I also got my associate in Computer Programming. Then I got a scholarship to go to France for a master degree in teaching French. I also learned Sign Language. I worked for 12 years as school district language supervisor. Then I got my second scholarship to come to Utah State University for my second master degree in Instruction Design. Right now I am working toward my doctorate in French.

So, I got the training to help you in Spanish, French, Portuguese and ASL in the area of Languages. My method is the communicative approach and I know how to help you.

If you need help with Theology, music and computer, you will be able to learn from my passion for them. For the area of Theology, I can help you to understand more about religion. For the music, I can teach you how to play the clarinet, and for the computer, my specialty are Windows and Mac, I can teach computer software and hardware, MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Photoshop, Captivate, Storyline, etc. Just ask and I will let you know if I can help you.

I have a 24 hour cancellation policy, but I can work it out if there is an emergency. You can choose either to come to my office at my home in our living room, or to go to a local book store, or I can go to your place if you are not able to make it to those other locations.

I look forward to hearing from you and I will do my best to help you to achieve success in your studies.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I have a bachelor's in theology and I am working to get my master's in Divinity. I have been a pastor for 25 years now. I preach every Sunday with a Bible-based sermon. I teach the Bible in Sunday School and in small groups for our church. My method is based in studying the original language of the Bible, Greek and Hebrew. I consult different translations: Literal and Dynamic translation. My favorite ones are the English Standard Version (ESV), King James Version (KJV) and New International Version (NIV). Then, I apply the inductive and deductive expository teaching of the Bible. Finally, I apply it and use enough illustrations to show how to do it.

Dreamweaver

I have a master degree in Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences from Utah State University. Dreamweaver is one of the tools we often use to make websites. I myself decided to buy the software from Adobe and I have the version Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 v. 10. One cool feature of Dreamweaver is that you can preview your website in different browsers while you are building it or you can work in a double windows environment where you can work with the code in the upper window and see how it looks like in the lower windows. I know HTML and Dreamweaver comes with all the code that I need, so I don't have to remember them. It also allows to insert email, links, images, etc. by clicking to buttons. I also use Dreamweaver to easily update my website. and connect to my domain by using my user name and password.

Portuguese

Portuguese is my 4th language. After I learned the language in college, I went to Sao Paulo, Brazil and stayed with a Brazilian family while I was doing my internship at the universidade de Campinas. Being in immersion really strengthened my fluency. Years later, I took a refresher course at Utah State University with a Brazilian visiting professor and I had the opportunity to have Brazilian visitors staying in my house.

QuickBooks

I have been using QuickBooks for many years. I am the owner of the non profit and I use QuickBooks to handle my finances and payroll. I had a desktop version, but with so many updates every year, I decided to use the online version. I have my bank accounts connected, so all the transactions are downloaded automatically and all my expenses are automatically labeled and I can see the balance of my bank accounts. I have a database of my donors and their contributions and I can easy add another one by clicking in the button new member or donor. I also can manage my vendors easily and manage transactions. I can visualize and print reports. Taxes and Payroll are really easy to handle as the incomes and expenses are automatically organized by the program. I can list my products and even order checks within the software. A few months ago, I taught QuickBooks to an accountant and she is now an expert.

Sign Language

I learned sign language in 1988. I have a certificate of completion. Since then, I became a teacher and counselor for the deaf population. As a pastor I preached a sermon every Sunday for 100 deaf parishoners. I worked as interpreter for the families of the deaf and for their employer. I also taught children at a deaf School. The Baptist Convention of the Dominican Republic provided funds to establish 30 churches for deaf. In order to do that, we trained 30 new interpreter. I was one of the teacher to teach them Level 1, 2 and 3 and we used the book The Joy of Signing by Lottie Riekehof and also the book Ministry for the deaf by Dana. I also worked as camp counselor for the deaf every summer and winter. In every camp, we offered Sign language classes for the interpreter. Right now I am working to take the test to become an official interpreter for the State of Utah.

Spanish

I am a native Speaker of Spanish. I have a Bachelor in Modern Languages and a Master degree in Education. I have taught Spanish to diverse population in group and one-on-one settings. I love to teach and I usually follow a communicative approach method that includes listening and Speaking, reading and writing. I use lots of visuals for my teaching and I believe that the best way to learn is in immersion.

Tax Preparation

As a business owner I have been doing my own taxes since 2009 to present. In 2012, I offered myself as a volunteer for the Vita(Volunteer Income Tax Assistance)program and I have been volunteered since then. The program is offered by the IRS to help low income family, the elderly and people with a disability. Every year I have been recognized and I have certificates and letter of recognition by the IRS. This year I opened my own tax site for the Grow And Multiply Ministry(my business). I applied for e-services filing and I was assigned a EFIN(s) (Electronic Filing Identification) Number(s). Every year I receive training by the IRS personnel and I have to take 3 tests(basic, intermediate and advanced) as well as special tax cases test: Health savings account, Capital Gains and Losses, etc. At the site I am a tax preparer and a reviewer to other tax preparer.
