Hello!

My name is Benjamin Covington, and I have been a tutor/instructor for 18 years! I am originally from Texas, but I have also lived in Oregon, California, and I am currently attending graduate school in Utah. I returned to graduate school a bit late in life and I am about to graduate from Utah State University with a Ph.D. in Neuroscience with a specialization in Educational Neuroscience.

My great passion in life is learning, and I want to instill the same passion in others! I have been a tutor my entire adult life and have also conducted research specifically in mathematical learning and autism spectrum disorder. I have taught students at nearly every level of education from elementary through college, and currently teach statistics at Utah State University. I have previously taught math, reading and writing as part of standardized test prep for the Princeton Review, and I have privately tutored high school- and college-level math and science. I also have specialized experience with students who have special needs, most precisely individuals with high functioning autism spectrum disorder and/or ADHD.

My special gift is diagnosing learners’ problem areas and helping them identify tools that work best for them. I have experience with a wide variety of subjects (e.g., standardized testing (MCAT, GRE, SAT/ACT), reading, writing/grammar, basic and higher-level mathematics and statistics, statistical applications (SPSS, SAS, R), Microsoft Office) and an extensive knowledge of teaching theory and various approaches. My greatest strengths as a teacher are:

- A proficiency at communicating complex concepts directly and intelligibly through numerous media.

- A natural ability to help students identify their strengths as learners and engage them as active partners in reaching their personal goals.

- A deep passion and commitment to the value of learning itself, regardless of the subject.

I have used Microsoft Outlook in multiple professional contexts to manage task lists, coordinate meetings, contact team members, and help organize team projects. I have used various editions of Outlook. I have also assisted others in the use of Outlook as they developed occupational skills.
Microsoft Windows,

Microsoft Windows

I have used Windows for a variety of educational and professional contexts over the course of the last two decades. I have been required to make use nearly every function in the Windows environment at some point, including data sharing, file management, security and system integrity, command line functionality, remote access, device integration, and cloud integration. I have taught various elements of Windows functionality to research assistants for projects that I lead.

Elementary Education

Study Skills,

Study Skills

One of the unique parts of my educational and occupational background is the recurrent focus on various approaches to learning. As an instructor and tutor, I've worked with students who needed to develop study skills tailored to their personal learning style (e.g., visual, read/write, kinesthetic). As a peer advisor for at-risk college freshmen, I not only coached students in study skills, but also helped them create long-term action plans to develop self-sufficiency in study. I've also worked with students across language barriers and with special needs to identify the greatest obstacles and to cultivate the most effective skills with the least hassle. I don't teach study skills simply from experience either. I am very familiar with pedagogical theory and its implications for students' study habits through developmental years and into adulthood. I have applied these principles to help elementary school students and collegians alike grow in their study skills.

I have been trained through my neuroscience Ph.D. program to employ a wide array of biostatistical approaches (e.g., clinical trials, survival analysis, exact tests, meta-analyses). I have employed these approaches in my own research and have consulted on projects with others seeking to do the same. I am accustomed to a wide array of data and logistics constraints defining problems in such a fashion as to require nuances applications of basic and higher-order biostatistical methods.

Approachable and supportive

Benjamin immediately engaged our student, who was not feeling well that day. The session was productive and our student felt that Benjamin "thinks like I do" and could relate to him. High praise from a teenager.

Great teacher and mentor.

Benjamin made learning important and sparked a desire in my son to want to learn more. I am very impressed with Benjamin and his ability to inspire.
