About Jenifer

I am an enthusiastic individual who enjoys learning and sharing that learning with people of all ages. I have a Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering with a focus on Biomaterial Science and an Bachelors degree in Neuroscience. I enjoy making connections between things, and work my "day job" as a researcher in the Neurobiology and Anatomy Department of the University of Utah where I study the genetics of long term memory formation. In tutoring, I work to inspire my students to ask questions about the world and connect the topics they are studying to a larger picture of our existence. It is important to for students to learn how to think critically and establish the problem solving skills they need to live in the modern world. I enjoy helping student develop these skills by connecting things they are studying to work that I do in science on a day to day basis. This shows them that what they are doing actually has a real world application, which can help students become more motivated to learn.

I have been an active member of Americorp working with inner city pre-school children in Pittsburgh, and an avid volunteer at a learning center working with disabled children in the same city. I have student taught biology and chemistry-related classes at the undergraduate level, taught undergraduate freshman calculus, and taken a many classes in science and mathematics. I am experienced at working with Computers including the Microsoft Office Suite (Work, Excel, Publisher), and love using technology to efficiently advance learning. I have been working with WyzAnt doing One-on-One tutoring for over 3 years, and adapt my tutoring methods uniquely to each student I have as their needs require. While I typically do lessons in person, I have also provided online tutoring via Skype, particularly for students writing essays where we can work on together in a google document.

Please give me the opportunity to help you learn more about some of these subjects and how they relate to the real world!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

My undergraduate degree was in neuroscience and included extensive non-class related laboratory experiences. This give me a good working knowledge of most micro, molecular, and cellular biological systems, and the ability to figure out and explain new ones or ones that I'm not familiar with as well. I work in a Neuroscience Research lab, and use and apply the principles of biology on a daily basis in my work.

Chemistry

I have an undergraduate minor in chemistry and my Masters in Biomedical Engineering with a focus on the Chemistry of Self-Assembling Biomaterials. This being the case, I have a very good working knowledge of basic chemical and biochemical concepts and their applications. I can typically figure out how to work through problems and also discuss how they apply to the real world.

Elementary (K-6th)

I've worked with pre-school and school aged children in reading and math through the Americorps Program in JumpStart and Head Start classrooms. These programs were dedicated to one on one interactions with children for early reading and math skills. I've also worked at daycare centers with school age children assisting them with homework and problem solving in a variety of situations.

Elementary Math

I have done a lot of work with students of various ages helping them learn and practice how to solve math problems. I have worked with preschool children in a program developing basic math skills. I find a visual approach works best, particularly with younger students. To this end, I'd frequently bring a white board and dry erase markers so that students can get their hands on something and get up and draw sometimes. This helps break the lesson, makes learning math a little more fun, and hopefully helps with the learning process.

Very thorough — Julian said the lesson was very helpful and feels a lot more confident going into his pre-calculus exam. The tips on organization were great for him. Thanks! ...
