Bio

I am a passionate educator who absolutely loves the biological and earth sciences. So if you want someone who truly values these subjects, I am the person for you. I spent 15 years in college and graduate school, so I completely understand the material, the stresses, and the different ways of teaching these subjects, so I can effectively help you through the somewhat baffling education system. Professionally I have taught college and high school, and have tutored students from second grade to graduate students. So I can effectively interact with students of any age and skill ability.

Outside of my academic science I run a nonprofit that performs rope rescue research, and I volunteer/teach with search and rescue across North America. So If you are outdoor minded, we will have a lot to talk about because I am an avid caver, distance backpacker, packrafter, and general lover of the outdoors.

I am a uniquely trained scientist with B.S. degrees in Geology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, and Conservation and Evolutionary Biology, an MA in Geobiology (more evolutionary biology/paleontology), and a PhD in Earth Sciences. So I can help with nearly any biological science at an introductory level, earth science (soft rock and paleontology), and my favorite is human and comparative anatomy. I have taught and tutored these subjects for years to students of all ages, so I have a good idea where the pitfalls are in learning the material and how to shepherd you through mastering the information and ideas.

If you want any help, just contact me and we can arrange a meeting. Before our meeting I will ask you what you are having trouble with so I can design a lesson custom made for your needs. The more information you can give me, the better a lesson I can provide!

Passionate and prepared

Tom is patient, friendly, and makes learning fun. Tom can relate to a students challenge and tries to figure out where/why a student is struggling and suggests many ways to address the same. My son liked his style and approach. Tom was prompt to respond and was able to conduct a class on a short notice.
