Brigham Young University (English )
Hello, I am retired school teacher. I taught English, Spanish, and Humanities to 7th, 8th, and 9th graders in Bountiful, Utah for 4 years. My husband was in the military and we moved a lot so I quit teaching in the public school system and began teaching private music lessons. I taught folk guitar, accordion, beginning piano, trumpet, and ukulele. I have just returned from China where I taught English as a Second Language(ESL)at Tianjin University to PhD students.
I have published two books of poetry (2008) available at Amazon. (Bread and Butter Christmas Poems and Bread and Butter Poems of Life) My claim to fame is that I graduated from Brigham Young University two years after I graduated from high school, earning my 4 year degree in just 2 years. After spending 18 months in Spain, I returned to the University and got a 2nd BA degree in Spanish. I have also lived 7 years in Germany and speak German. I have recently returned from China, where I taught English to University students. I enjoy working with and teaching young people who want to learn. Hello, I am retired school teacher. I wanted to wait at least a month before I gave a review so as to have a real sense of Jean's teaching style and lesson content.
When we started, mid-November, I had no practical experience with sewing machines. I did not yet own one, and my overall knowledge was limited to hand sewing, needlepoint, and some basic knowledge from a home economics class 16 years ago. Jean has been patient, thorough, and thoughtful with an ease to her approach that has made learning a joy.
I not only feel confident in what I have learned, I feel I am getting a real sense of what I'm doing. When I make a mistake, I can see it. I think of how the mistake can be amended - which directly reflects Jean's teaching. She has a terrific mix of allowing her students to experiment while also explaining how our selections of fabric, thread, stitch, and design could be helpful or hindering. The result is a confidence in what you are doing which lingers after she has left.
I can now see how the lessons compound, and how we (my partner and I) will be applying these techniques to future projects and more complex undertakings. I would highly recommend Jean's tutelage. It is superlative, and could only benefit anyone from beginner to someone wanting to improve.
Starting from the first tutoring session, Jean came well prepared with materials and activities that interested both of my children at age-appropriate and engaging levels.
I have learned English for about 18 months; she is on time and always patient with my progress. I could also learn about culture in America. I think she must be one of the invaluable tutors for whom looking for good teachers in English.
Jean is an excellent tutor. She is very experienced and is well organized. Jean is extremely patient. I've had a great experience learning Spanish with her help. She encourages you and supports you even when your struggling. I highly recommend her.
Jean is a great tutor/teacher with a lot of experience. She is always upbeat and very professional. I look forward to lessons and each week I learn something new and useful. Jean really cares about her students. Once she sent me a postcard from her vacation to wish me luck on a musical performance. Thanks to her fine instruction and encouragement, I'm doing well on the accordion!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
The ASVAB test is simply a battery of multiple choice questions to measure your general background knowledge. Understanding the question and how to respond is the key to doing well. I graduated in English and Spanish and am acquainted with the structure of the ASVAB. I enjoy helping those who want to learn!
I have a Secondary Education Certificate in English, however I have been teaching young children in music and English since my college days. Young Children require more examples and repetition, than older students, to gain understanding and control over the desired subject matter. Basic education and study skills are essential for progress, and I usually work hardest with a student, on the basics of the target subject.
I graduated from Brigham Young University with a BA in English. English language mastery is a must in today's competitive world. I emphasize reading, writing and proper usage. I taught English and humanities for four years in the public school system, but since we moved a lot, I stopped teaching in the public schools and instead started teaching privately. I enjoy teaching students who want to learn.
English is widely spoken and used in both the business world and in common everyday exchanges. I graduated in English from Brigham Young University, and have lived many years in foreign countries. I have been teaching ESL/ESOL for the past several years, and enjoy teaching people who want to learn. When teaching English, I not only teach grammar and language, but also culture, and working skills in an English speaking environment.
I have been playing musical instruments since I was very young and so know the basics of music from many different aspects. I also play other instruments including: Piano, Accordion, Guitar, Concertina, Flute, Violin, Recorder flute, Harmonica, Trumpet, and Auto Harp.
Grammar is an important part of written communication and a certain mastery of the rules is important to be successful in school and at work. I graduated in English from Brigham Young University, and have been teaching English in one form or another ever since.
I have played guitar since I was a teenager, and have taught basic folk guitar many times in my home. I do not play jazz or classical, just basic picks and chords for accompaniment.
Literature is the window of society where we can see the attitude and character of mankind. Authors often say one thing and allow the reader to discover the layers of other messages in the writing. I enjoy teaching young people and helping them see and understand the meaning of the language underneath the surface.
I have a Bachelor's Degree in English and another in Spanish. As I teach others to sound out words, I must use my phonics background gained from English to help the student hear and understand the relationship between letters and how they work together. Phonics is almost a lost art, but absolutely essential in learning to master spelling, reading and writing. Each letter represents one or MORE sounds depending on the combination of letters. For example "c" makes a "k" sound when followed by an "a", "o" or "u" but makes an "s" sound when followed by an "e", "i" or "y". One must learn to recognize the patterns and apply the rules in reading, writing and spelling new words. Phonics is taught to young and old, foreign and native speakers by using games and repetition.
Reading skills are demanded in all facets of life, whether following simple directions, broadening knowledge, or enjoying an escape novel. Reading skills can be improved by understanding the language structure, and the vocabulary involved in written communication. Reading skills will also improve spoken syntax vocabulary usage and subtle connotations.
KNITTING AND CROCHETING: I have been knitting and crocheting as a hobby since I was 16 years old. I don't do anything fancy, just the basics to make footies, blankets, shawls, handbags, etc. and enjoy teaching new skills to those who wish to learn. I work exclusively with yarn because it is the easiest medium in which to learn and teach.
I spent a year and a half in Spain, experiencing the culture, mastering the language and talking with the people on a daily basis. After I returned, I completed a BA in Spanish from Brigham Young University, and then taught Spanish in junior high and high school for the next four years. When I teach, I work with the basics because I believe a firm foundation in grammar, and pronunciation is the key to speaking the language and enjoying the culture.
I have worked with many foreign speakers to help them learn better English language communication skills. I have a BA in English and enjoy working with students who desire to learn. I am familiar with the TOEFL test, the kinds of questions asked, and the skills needed to be successful in passing.
I have been a creative writer since I was in high school. Because I enjoy writing, I received my BA degree in English, and have continued to write and teach writing skills. I have published two books of poetry: Bread and Butter Poems of Life, and Bread And Butter Christmas Poems. The pen is truly mightier than the sword, because the written word helps us discover who we really are!
