Dear Prospective Pupil,
I am a well-rounded tutor with strong educational background, plus 15 years of real-world experience in marine biology, science research, and nature conservation projects in over 50 countries. I offer a firm foundation in the fundamentals of natural sciences, math, and social studies, and add a unique global and practical perspective to the curriculum, providing examples of how many of these subjects are used by scientists, researchers, and conservationists in the form of actual case studies. I am highly motivated and ready to help you learn and grow. As a father myself, I am sensitive to the needs of children and young adults, and I will tailor the curriculum and methods to the individual pupil.
Before we get ever get started with a lesson, I will want get to know you and make a connection. Whether your needs are short- or long-term in nature, the pupil-tutor relationship is an important one and I want to create a comfortable, safe, fun, and inspiring atmosphere from the start.

My 9 year old said he "knew his stuff!". Showed up on time ready to work. Will use as much as time allows.
Alfonso's work with our daughter both motivated her and inspired her confidence that she could do well on the ACT exam with his assistance in the math and science portions. A critical learning component for her was to get through more of the exam questions within the allotted time - her biggest challenge to date. She wrote the exam this morning and "felt good" about it.
Thanks very much to Alfonso for his timely intervention to help her prepare and to get over her mindset that she "just doesn't do well on standardized tests".
Alfonso is fantastic! My daughter struggled with understanding two scientific definitions for 6 months now and in one session Al figured out how to explain the meanings to her in a way which she now understands! He is also very patient and did a thorough "what are you studying and where is your general comfort level" exploratory conversation before starting. He is definitely the right tutor for my daughter and we highly recommend him.
Al has an excellent rapport with my daughter. He has the ability to connect by teaching simple concepts as well as more advanced topics. Thanks for always being available.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
One of the reasons I chose my college and graduate school was that students were exposed to a wide variety of subjects in the sciences and humanities. My education spanned natural biological sciences, chemistry, and geology, plus technical fields like developmental biology, genetics, and physics. Within the natural sciences, I focused on botany and zoology, so I am trained and experienced in plant and animal ecology, interactions, and conservation. Additionally, I worked in the university herbarium and greenhouse, learning to identify common and exotic plants, as well as techniques for grafting and testing genetic composition. My graduate research focused on submersed vegetation (aka sea grasses) life history and ecology.
Some of my most rewarding professional relationships have been with students from high school, university, and graduate schools as well as junior colleagues whom I have worked with over the years. I've helped high school and college students learn about careers in the natural sciences, speaking at job fairs and career days, and supervising their summer internships. I have served as mentor and dissertation adviser to gradate students, helping to improve their research projects and advising them on options for applying their education in the 'real world' upon graduation. Further, other colleagues have come to me for advice and mentoring in areas ranging from career development, project management, networking, and strategic planning. I enjoy all these situation because I know I'm helping others, but at the same time, learning a lot myself.
You name a sport or physical activity, and I've probably done it (at least once). Most of them I actually enjoy, and I have been playing soccer, tennis, and other team sports since age four. About 10 years ago, I added yoga, pilates, triathlon, and climbing to my fitness passions. I've been a personal trainer, triathlon coach, and swim instructor and I am CPR and first aid certified. I look forward to sharing my experience and training with you.
I've been using computers almost daily for approximately 20 years to do basic and complex tasks in my professional and personal life. I love leaning ways to use computers more efficiently and discovering new applications. I am familiar with and comfortable using PC and Mac computers and have done basic programming to custom design programs for new uses.
I've been using Outlook as my primary email software for about 15 years. In that time, I have learned the basics of how the program functions, and also know how to customize it to the needs of the user. I love the functionality of the email and calendar features and consider this program to be essential to business and personal organizing and communications.
My high school and college training in debate and forensics provided a solid foundation for 15 years of speeches, conference presentations, and workshop facilitation. Public speaking has been fundamental to my education and professional experience and I enjoy helping others learn basic principles, methods of persuasion, and practical tips for reducing nervousness and improving effectiveness.
To me, "The Beautiful Game" is not just a catchy way to describe soccer. Thanks to my father, who was a semi-pro goalkeeper on the weekends, this sport has been a passion of mine since I was knee-high to him, and I continue to play several times a week. I've studied and practiced fundamentals and strategies, and I've coached several little league teams.
I was well known in my university and graduate school as someone who never seemed to study. The truth is I did study, but I honed my study skills to maximize efficiency and effectiveness, meaning I could spend relatively little time studying, but achievied excellent results in learning the material and on tests. Less time studying, more understanding, higher grades. What could be better?
I have been a lifeguard and swim instructor for over 15 years, working with children of all ages and adults. I am certified through organizations, American Red Cross and American Lifeguard Association. I currently work for a gym as a swim instructor and have clients who meet me for private and group lessons.
I remember my first tennis lesson. It didn't go so well, mainly because it was difficult to even lift the racket high enough to hit the ball. (Keep in mind these were the days with clunky wood or aluminum rackets.) Luckily, I grew, and eventually became an avid player, even giving lessons for children and teens who were starting from scratch or wanting to improve technique and strategy.
Prior to beginning my own yoga practice 10 years ago, I admit to being skeptical of all the people (many of whom were even family and friends) who claimed yoga could transform body and mind, reduce stress, and reverse some health problems. It didn't take long to see many of those benefits myself and became a teacher to gain a deeper understanding for myself, and allow sharing those benefits with others.
