Mesa State College (Colorado Mesa University) (Elementary Education)
Currently I am teaching 5th grade at an elementary school in Ogden, UT. I have five years of teaching experience in 1st, 4th, and 5th grades in Colorado. I have also done intervention work in math, reading, and writing for grades Kindergarten through 6th. I have a teaching license for both Utah and Colorado. Along with teaching, I also have been a Girl Scout leader, which has given me a lot of experience working with kids in multiple settings. I believe a good education is important for every person, and I would like to help every student succeed in getting this education.
I am an avid reader and try to pass on the love of reading to every student. I work with them to find books that interest them so that they will read more. I have worked with a few different reading intervention strategies including: Burst and Rewards. I don't feel that any one program can give a student all they need, so I pull in strategies and ideas from different programs to help the student with what they specifically need.
Math has become a new favorite of mine, also. I struggled with math when I was in school, so I can relate to those struggling students. Because of this struggle, I love the "new math" and have done many hours of training on AddVantage Math Recovery which helps the students understand the new math. I have many fun activities to help the students with the math concepts that they struggle with the most.
Writing is always a struggle for kids, so I try to keep it real to them. I feel that they will write better if they have a purpose. I do a lot of modeling so that I can show students how they can talk or think through the writing process. We always start at the beginning with sentence structure and work through planning, the rough draft, editing and revising, until they can do it on their own.
The summer slump does happen, and I would be glad to help keep your student from losing any of the hard gained knowledge over the summer. Please contact me to set up a free introductory session. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
