About Curtis

School is tough, and so is everything else that is worth doing. I will not hold on to your pencil or give you answers; instead, I will guide you in your work, so you can do it again on a test or in real life. As a past substitute teacher, I have experience teaching in many different environments - from elementary classrooms, to high school, to a technology college welding shop. As a recent college graduate, I can relate to students, as a student - not a professor. I can share the the recent tips and ideas that have helped me through my own studies. I can be the most help to you in the broad topics of math, engineering, and computers.

From math basics, up to Calculus and Differential Equations. I specialize in engineering topics (including mechanical; aerospace; and basic computer programming, civil, and electrical). I have nearly all of my college books (which are recent editions), for additional teaching aides.

I can help with anything from math basics, to algebra, calculus and differential equations. I enjoy the logical order of math and enjoy sharing the experience as others find their way through a problem. Lately, I've been volunteering at a middle school to show how math can be fun, and how it can apply to real-life situations. With a little help in relating math to out-of-class topics, math can become much easier and enjoyable.

My favorite subject is engineering. Recently, I graduated with a bachelors degree in mechanical and aerospace engineering. I placed third in an engineering design competition hosted by the Air Force. Earlier, this year I became certified SolidWorks design with Dasault Systems (SolidWorks is software for drafters and engineers). I have learned some fundamentals in other engineering disciplines such as civil and electrical.

Earlier this year, I wrote a computer program for finding important airplane flight dynamics. This meant gathering data from arbitrary text files, using complex algebra, sub-routines, and visual outputs. I learned programming using C++ but have worked in Fortran and have worked extensively in Matlab.

I look forward to talking with you and helping you understand your subject better!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Mechanical Engineering

I received my BS in mechanical engineering with an emphasis in aerospace engineering. I am a member of two engineering organizations - ASME and SAMPE. While at Utah State University I was the vice president of the university's chapter of SAMPE.

My senior design team won third place in the Air Force Research Lab's student engineering challenge. The project involved testing for specific friction coefficients, dynamic analysis, solid model drafting, strength analysis, jumping off a telephone pole for product testing, etc...

I lead in organizing a design/build/fly competition for students and locals at Utah State. This was restricted to small gliders made from composite materials. The SAMPE group, and I instructed students in laying carbon fiber plates, officiated at the competition, and gave tips on how to build an efficient plane. The SAMPE group at Utah State hope to make this into an annual competition.
